I have my lock on, on max. You can still hit enemies coming from the side by swinging at the right time, but you should constantly be moving when theres more than one enemy and making them cross in front of each other, to control the amount of them able to attack you at the same time.

Funny enough theyll more than often knock each other out or down trying to attack you if done correctly.
