Longsword is a good mix of offense and defense. controlled swings are key to you're success. I like to almost always have some kind of motion to my sword. The more potential threats I throw out the more they have to react. Get to defensive and you might get overwhelmed, not to say that turtling up isn't an option. It is, and it is effective, but the risk is all on you and one wrong parry and you're done.

Holding alt also puts AI in defensive mode, they start swinging anticipating a stab. Which opens up opportunity to stab.

So there's passive and active parries. Passives are done from a neutral guard sorta mimicking the overall motion of your opponents blade, these are the easiest but not the most effective. Active parrying is as it implies, actively parrying the blade with a cut of your own much riskier, but with higher rewards and possible master strike potential. That being a cut that they have no reasonable way of defending.
