the biggest problem is that even if I parry an enemy they will charge a successive strike straight after, catching me off guard and probably hitting an opening in my guard

As soon as you start using this kind of function, antivirus software doesn't like it, I sent an email (this morning) to support to check my file but I'm still waiting for a reply from them. I found a new strat that works on all enemies might have some issues now that enemies can kick, if you halfsword, raise the sword, and use it to grapple an enemy with the blade at their back or the back of their neck you can saw your blade back and forth to easily kill them.

I think you are not using it as it should be used, main advantages are big smashing swing. You need to give yourself more time and range, closing in and grappling reduces* the effectiveness for you.
