you kinda gotta lean into it? idk a lot of HEMA is very grapple-y and goofy looking
if there's one major flaw it's that pinning an opponent means very little because there's no guidance/assistance for dagger piercing
so getting in between armor plates is impossible

TBH 6 months is about how often mordhau dropped updates and that game died pretty quick since it was essentially a practice sim for the combat. Faster production timelines with smaller scope maps seems more viable for melee slasher production, especially if it's exclusivley single player

tbh i do think the controls need some tweaking, and i fully expecr the final game to feel slightly different to play. and you can practice and git gud and everything but just because i can consistently do vertical swings doesn't mean that there's any reason it should take hours for people to be able to perform the simplest possible action.
like maybe how goofy the physics makes combat feel initially and overcoming that is part of the appeal they're going for but i have literally no training and when i rarely spar with my LARP friends i can perform all of these movements far more easily/intuitively irl than in HS

They're sticking hard to the 15th century, but that doesn't necessarily mean firearms aren't out of the picture! Ranged weaponry is confirmed for the final game, whether it will be firearms or bows, we will not know yet.
