Basically. VR (and AR too) track the Headset position and rotation using 3 main components/sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass.

Combining the readings of all 3 sensors you can pretty much code a 6dof movement sensor... Most Cellphones RN have all those sensors incorporated because Apps like Google Maps like to know your exact position and global rotation... Ironically we currently have Aerospacial Technology in the palm of our hands

the Camera could be a 4th sensor that could help tracking be more accurate (AR does that).

This means we dont really need to buy a Headset to enjoy VR, we just need someone to code an Phone App and a Computer Program that connect via Wifi/Bluetooth and make Steam or any game recognize the Phone as a VR Headset
