Summary: I am looking to purchase a 240 Hz monitor but I like to play my games at 144 fps. The monitor I want to buy does not have G-Sync.

  1. Assume my game is running/capped at 144. If I buy the 240 Hz monitor, but force it to use 144 Hz (Display -> Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Refresh Rate -> 144 240) will this cause any issues or tearing of some sort? Or will it be just as smooth as a native 144 Hz monitor?

  2. Alternatively, if I kept my monitor at 240 Hz, and capped my game at 144 fps, will my game feel choppy or tear? Or will it be just as smooth as a native 144 Hz monitor?

Thank you for reading, I would appreciate the help so that I can spend my money wisely

  1. It should not to cause any stuttering...
  2. The only thing that can affect the smoothness of your performance in higher FPS count is the brute force of your hardware (specially your GPU). If your games can run in 120fps smoothly, at least, then Lossless would do a great deal if you want to try 240fps. Now, if your GPU cannot to handle with too much frames, maybe you'll have to lock your FPS in the game lower and try to use Lossless to find a good balance in the quality and in the performance...

Huh. In my experience it looks smoothest if my fps is within 3 of my monitor's refresh rate. I would argue that 144fps would look far smoother with refresh rate set to 144hz than with it set to 240hz. That's the purpose of Gsync, Freesync, and VRR, as it syncs your monitor's hz to game's FPS, making it look smoother.
I might be wrong here though. This is speaking from personal experience experimenting with a 165hz monitor and lower framerates.
