I do get the sentiment of not wanting the timer at the top of the screen at all times. Aesthetically it just isn't pleasing even though it's good information to have. I would say personally I would be ok if the timer only showed up when I hit "ESC" to open the menu. Just being able to check it when I want to would be nice.
I know this would be making more work, but maybe a UI rework for the round timer would be a good idea. Put it in the corner and give it the same look as the charge meter with a little clock that is ticking down. Still put the final time at the top of the screen of course though.
