#KSP2weeklychallenge is here! This week, Land on Eve!

🏆 Primary: Land a vehicle (crewed or uncrewed) on Eve
🏆 Stretch: Land a vehicle on Eve that you're pretty sure could survive the landing even after re-entry heat is added to the game (warning: we'll be asking you to re-fly this craft when re-entry heat is added to the game)
🏆 Jeb Level: Land a vehicle at as high an altitude as you can on Eve (your screenshot should show the altimeter set to Sea Level mode)
🏆 Val Level: Land a crewed vehicle on Eve and return that crew safely to Kerbin

how to land on eve by me

step 1: unlock full control of all of your bodys functions and learn how to use 100% of your brain
step 2: make a rocket that can do it
step 3: land on eve

how to return from eve:
step 1: UNLOCK YOUR ENTIRE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND TAKE OVER THE 4TH DIMENSION
step 2: MENTALLY PREPARE YOURSELF BY STOCKING UP THOUSANDS OF MONITORS KEYBOARDS AND MICE
step 3: blow up your whole rocket while attempting to leave eve
step 4: become god
step 5: now you have a 0.5% chance of making it

Going for Stretch, Wish me luck!

(Ive got the rocket built and going to orbit, slowmode is prolly gonna prevent me, 1:18PM)
(Got eve encounter and all i need to do is orbit, 1:36 PM)

I have the challenge done, i have the pics to prove it. For some reason it deleted my message and now im on 30 min slowmode. this is ridiculous! kerbnoooooo (1:54PM)

I pretty sure the heat shield was overkill but would survive reentry but ended up in the ocean and had to swim to shore. Bill at the end is trying to figure out who the cameraman was as he when to Eve alone.

In order to cut costs and reach our budget goals, The Duna Company Inc. made it to Eve's surface with the same lander used to reach Duna. However, the vessel seems to wobble uncontrollably upon landing, perhaps evidence of seismic activity on the surface of Eve?

Hello everyone and welcome back to another video!

Today we are sending a "Scout" Mission to the surface of Eve!

I am doing an experiment to see what is better for youtubers! Liking and sharing or Subscribing and watching more Video's! Please share and like to contribute to this experiment!

Thank you to Cory for making my Sprites!

After much blood, sweat, tears, and lost braincells, I finally finished the val level for this challenge. In kerbal style, I forgot to include a chute for the renetry for kerbin, so Bob had EVA for a nice SAFE splash in the ocean at 200 m/s. Thank god for struts and burn through timewarp, bc my interplanetary stage had .10 twr.

Val Level: I created a rocket for up to 5 Kerbals that is able to land and get back to orbit from Eve (I just forgot to put 5 in so only Valentina is actually flying that thing to the time I made that screenshot).

In orbit was my interplanetary shuttle to move around the Kerbolar-System. With Solar Modules, Gilly Lander (which sended two Kerbals to Gilly and back).
It even had a small Eve scout plane on board (sadly not reusable, since not that much fuel) to check out how Eve looks below its cloud layer as preparation for the mission.

I did the mission in early march with the release version. I sadly don't have that many screenshots of it, in case thats not enough I'm gonna redo the entire mission.

Bit disheartened at the end result, but I had fun! I got a return vessel in orbit over eve, designed what i think can make it off eve, quite the odd build, but has 12k delta and 2.5ish t/w all through the stages but it always ends in me either blowing up on land or sinking through the mesh if i pulse the stage to blow off a couple extra m/s. I'll rethink but sorry bob.. your lost to eves core bud 😦

I spent most of a day working on my ship designed to land and launch from Eve similar to how I do it in KSP1 (onion peeling) but the fairings that I place around the ship to get it into Kerbin orbit are not shielding it from the air physics. You can still see the airstream from wing tips on parts inside the fairing and things get pulled outside the fairing by air drag. Without the fairing, I still have to deal with structural failures between decouplers because of this drag pulling on parts in a way they were not meant to be pulled on. So I will not be participating any further in this challenge on account of bugged fairing physics because getting to and landing on Eve has never been the challenge for me. It's the launch back into orbit that is the true test of game physics completion.

Bob Kerman sacrificed himself for the good of Kerbalkind, there is no way he is making it back to Kerbin, however that was a risk he was willing to take. All for the good of science! You will be missed Bob, until next playthrough. o7

I gave up on trying to get my onion ship into Kerbin Orbit (the one that would later land and take off from Eve Surface) so I just slapped this one way probe lander and used it to test out Eve's current Aerobraking effects at very low Pe on first entry (low enough that it should burn up on entry). Landed in the night and advanced the clock to day to see the results.

My eve return video. It's only my second ksp2 video so it's admittedly not the best quality but it will improve over time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO7cNaMSPK4&ab_channel=Tortle6

Funny enough, this is my first Val-level challenge (also am I the first person in this thread to successfully do a return mission?)

In this Kerbal Space Program 2 video, I do one of the hardest things you can do in KSP2: an eve return mission. In an eve return mission, you need to fly from Kerbin, land on Eve, return to Eve orbit, then come back home to Kerbin. Since Eve has a very thick atmosphere, this mission is particularly difficult.

Without any effective way to test an Eve return vehicle, I wasn't near ready to commit to a manned mission, so probes it is. While I certainly didn't find the highest hill (that said, Eve in KSP 2 has substantially lower peaks than KSP 1-what's with KSP 2's diminished verticality?), I did happen across this nice lake valley.

open sparrow
#

Since I can't post any screenshots (for some reason the bot takes my messages down), I'm posting a link to imgur with the screens. https://imgur.com/gallery/pnV9n7E

I initially wanted to send the hydrogen ship, then the huge Eve lander then rendez-vous the two in LKO for docking. But as I've encountered too many bugs with undocking, and saves loading it was simpler to make a very big launcher for everything in one go. The framerate was a bit painful, but remained playable.

Weight is everything so, huge mass out, very little mass back as the return rocket itself was very tiny. I managed to get back to Eve's orbit from sea-ish level with 4-5k dV remaining though, so I stopped by Gilly to drop a little flag on the way back (forgot the screen). The huge lander has many heat shields on decouplers, I'm not sure it will survive re-entry once it's added, but I'll give it a go !

@frozen jolt I tried everything, post 10, post less than 4, reduce the size, change the format... If any one has any idea, I'll take it !

[Val Lvl Difficulty] This challenge was by far the hardest thing I have ever had to do in KSP 1 or 2. I had no idea how hard it was to leave Eve before starting this challenge and it took me around 20 attempts and redesigns to actually accomplish it. Even despite this I could not find a way with the current ladder mechanics so that Bill Kerban could even reach the ground to plant a flag lol. I am very much looking forward to never having to leave Eve again! Had extra dv so I landed at KSC >:).

Everybody still working on it keep going! Its worth the pain of the bugs and kracken attacks. Took me about 50 hours though kerbnoooooohands

dusty hull

# dusty hull Wow that’s a lot smaller than my lander Also 50 hours is insane, my Val level w...

Did you get any bugs with quick saving/loading in the atmosphere? It would corrupt my save file whenever I attempted it and my craft would explode in all other saves previous after that which was extremely frustrating. That was probably a good 20hrs dealing with that right there. But mostly it was inexperience, I last played ksp when I was like 11 years old and I’m re-learning as I go!

Primary challenge complete with a bonus fully functional relay network. There were actually 3 rovers in the delivery vehicle but one of the landing gear got pulled under the terrain by the kraken and the delivery vehicle rolled over and then got yeeted by the kraken and broke up. Somehow, all of the rovers survived. However, this was the only rover that landed right side up.

Made a rover and landed on Eve. The mothership then returned home on Kerbin. I am 100% certain the rover would be incinerated into a fine mist if thermal systems were currently in the game, but I am looking forward to doing this mission again when that is the case.

#

Before discovering (thanks "no situational dV/TWR displays!") that my SRBs and Skipper were practically useless on Eve, this was my first attempt (also marred by issues with struts and decouplers) -- Lander leaning over

Second attempt, with ZERO expectation of them ever leaving their capsule, and protected by a 2.5m inflatable heat-shield (and a 1000 km x 60 km entry-path)

split spindle
#

Well... I was going for Val mode (which is a massive pita with all the bugs; vehicles that big, I spend at least as much time fighting the UI and camera as building craft, and a mission with this many stages generally needs to be run at least a dozen times before it all goes off without any kraken attacks or other weird bugs).

In any case, I carefully designed a craft capable of doing the mission... or so I thought!

I landed a fully fueled return vehicle with 8700 m/s of dV for launch to Eve orbit and another 2200 for Kerbin return trajectory, almost 1 km/s above what was strictly required, so plenty of performance.

Sadly, once the Vectors I used to get through the thickest of the atmosphere and start to build momentum, were gone, along with their amazing thrust vectoring, all I had left were five Darts (aerospikes).

They're super efficient sustainers on Eve... but with no thrust vectoring, the craft turned out to be aerodynamically unstable, immediately flipping over and failing to reach space.

After fighting the game to do this mission for over a week now, with dozens of attempts and nine separate designs before I finally came upon one that didn't immediately disintegrate due to floopy joints and faulty glue, I'm just gonna accept Stretch mode and/or Jeb mode and call it a day.

P.S. 30 minute slow-mode, with mysterious rules about screenshots that just don't post anything if you have too many, along with the possibility of accidentally forgetting to Shift+enter? Suuuper annoying, just sayin'...

Went for stretch/Jeb Level this week. I sent this cute little rover to Eve in NASA's signature Mars Rover-style. The protective shell and heatshield should allow it to survive reentry once heating is added. The shield drops away once the main chute is inflated, and the shell contains some Seperatrons that lift it away from the rover once on the surface. I managed to land at excactly 1km elevation, but there are some nice mountains in the vicinity that our little roving friend could drive toward if need be!

Val level, maybe? Not sure if the same vehicle that landed needed to be used to return but I made something that could work. Heat levels should be mitigated easily with the design but more can be added if needed.

Weekly Challenge 7 - Land on Eve attempt (Stretch goal): I was about to do a Val level goal but realized that the gravity and especially the atmosphere were more extreme than Kerbin.
It has 4 layers of heatshields attached to it so when reentry heat is added, it would hopefully survive from reentry to landing.

I'm actually not sure, the game was giving me wild numbers all over the place during design so I was not sure it would have enough to get off Eve. I tested on Kerbin and could get to orbit with some fuel left in one Dart booster pair and the center core full, and the center core has about 5000 DV between the two stages, so I was pretty sure that would be enough. Asparagus staging makes all the difference here, keeps the center core full until all the boosters fall away.
