#Game freezes seconds after starting a run

does it become a spinning circle on the mouse cursor?
No. Picture freezes, sound effects stop, music continues.
Could you try to do a clean install of your GPU Drivers to ensure nothing went corrupt during the upgrade from Windows 10 to 11?
If you have NVIDIA u can do it through the “NVIDIA App”
I have a Ryzen 7600 and a Radeon 7900 GRE, 32GB RAM. I am just reinstalling / repairing drivers, will test.
Problem persists. I also did not encounter any problems with games like BG3 or CoH 3 since migrating to Windows 11.
That is so odd. Could you open AppData/LocalLow/Fiveamp/NIMRODS and send me the Player and Player-prev txt files to see if there’s anything inside the log files
Sure! I am not a heavy discord user apart from voice chat - how shall I send those files to you? 🙂
You could DM it to me or drag and drop it into this chat
Just did the DM - thx!

ShaderProgram is unsupported, but because jobified rendering is enabled the ShaderProgram can not be removed.
Hmm
That´s about as much I can read from that 😄
I just tried again after work and now the game did crash after waiting some time in "freeze mode". This leads to a much more verbose player.log and also a crash report generated. Would you like to have a look @blazing schooner ?
Yes please, DM it to me
Dm is out, thank you!
Definitely is a memory issue on the GPU according to the log. Something wrong is going on with the game and your machine but the problem is, I don't know what it is yet. Did you really ensure to completely wipe the AMD Driver and reinstall the latest?
I can try that again sure
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE has 16 GB of VRAM so that isn't the issue. Eventually the GPU device gets removed or the driver crashes according to the issue
Strange that it never happened in Win10 with the game. Also tried furmark and BG3 - no issues there (ok Furmark is OpenGL)
Do you overclock by any chance or no?
I do not overclock my graphics card. The CPU is manually tuned with PBO but only mildly and I have tweaked that over days. I am building my own PCs and overclocking for 30 years now, so I don´t think this is the problem with everything being Prime95 and Furmark stable and also stable in all other games for >1 year now. PSU is 850W Corsair, should also not be a bottleneck. Temps are fine also, below 70°C for the GPU in Furmark and no problematic hotspot temps.
Did deinstall and reinstall everything, also went to the newest available version, which is not WHQL at the moment. Game still freezes but crashes much faster now. Also the AMD adrenaline suit now notices a crash and generates a bug report - so that´s more or less an improvement. 😉
Interestingly I can also run around after loading the game as long as I like, shoot in the practice range etc.. The problems only start when I try to start a run.
Logs look like last time, no new information
I know you tried this already by reinstalling but let's try something in this order:
- Completely uninstall the game from Steam
- Navigate to
Steam\steamapps\commonand ensure NIMRODS it's deleted - Press WIN + R and paste in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Fiveamp\NIMRODS - You'll see a bunch of .JSON files. Copy them to your Desktop as a back up.
- Go back to the NIMRODS folder and delete that entire folder
- Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache
- Install NIMRODS and launch it
Let's see if this made any difference. If it doesn't, then at least I can remove that from the Troubleshoot list
K I´ll try that. Also thank you a lot for the great support - really appreciated
No problem! It's very unfortunate that this is happening because u can't enjoy the game at all due to this nasty issue
Oh and maybe disable Cloud Save on NIMRODS as well in the properties via Steam Library so that it gives you a new save file after you made the backup
That way we can assure there's no corruption in the save file
Did exactly what you wrote, sadly to no avail. Only difference is that the game now freezes again instead of crashing. The AMD Adrenaline suite still detects a driver crash in the background. I also took the time to update the BIOS to the latest version, update chipset drivers etc..
Yeah I'm almost certain it's a Driver crash that got introduced in Windows 11. Now the question is how do we fix it
It's possible you could be missing drivers too from the upgrade
Can you try to turn off overclocking on the CPU first? Disable it on the AMD software and maybe in the BIOS as well
@alpine glacier We had another player where the game crashed too similar to you and it actually ended up being an outdated Driver. He also uses AMD like you.
Did you use this tool to properly uninstall the driver from your system and clean it up with:https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/GPU-601.html
No I did not use that tool, I manually deinstalled, back to "ugly resolution" and "Generic graphics device". I will try those things out during the weekend. Thank you!
