#Make railgun shells work similar to canister shells, leaving an empty shell after shooting it

I wouldn’t say it’s really necessary but I think it would be cool if railgun shells after they were fired would leave an empty shell casing like canister shells do. It could just be the same as the empty can used shell and then you could refill it with either a railgun shot or a cannister shot.

That's not how railguns work

#

Cannisters shells are unrealistic

#

So making the railgun less realistic feels not smart

We also don't immeaditely iimplode when the sub breaches

#

I think realism can be sacrificed to make a weapon type better

tired hollow
#

The railgun shells are shot with a payload in them

#

This gimmick is for the canister shells

#

If anything this change would make railguns somehow more tedious to use

#

As you now have loads of empties you have to keep running back

#

They are not even mach 1

#

This type does not work with Kinetik energy

#

It's with a paiload

#

Also why would you do this?

#

What does it add to put a casing around your metal beam filled with c4

#

I think the main complaint people have is the overall resource cost of using the railgun

However, there is a mod like that being worked on

I think a nice buff to railgun is further boosts to what explosive you decide to add to the shell

#

especially in terms of aoe

#

if you put an acid grenade into a railgun shell it should at least have a double-triple aoe size and 1.5x damage

#

Right now the railgun is only mostly useful with nuclear shells ... and that makes sense

#

but it really should be rewarding players with that preemptive strike via it's built in explosive add-on too

I was looking for a mod that makes railgun shells leave a casing so it's cheaper to run.

#

Haven't found one, so I'm thinking to just make one myself.

Submarine weapons feel like they're fired with gunpowder instead of being magnetically accelerated because of the sounds and effects.
The "railgun shell" looks like a normal cannon shell, and the canister shot leaving an empty casing further proves its more realistic with gunpowder.

I think this mechanic would be acceptable if railguns got the massive damage boost they have needed for a while now to justify the extra work

functionally in-game and sfx wise the railgun is likely not working in a way we would relate to IRL existing technologies

New theory

The railgun shells use a rocket

And the fabs can make the fuel using water

Have you seen a real life railgun

#

Watch Hyper Velocity Projectile (HVP) being demonstrated at U.S. Navy's research labs.

The HVP is a next-generation, common, low drag, guided projectile capable of completing multiple missions for gun systems such as the Navy 5-Inch, 155-mm, and future railguns. Types of missions performed will depend on gun system and platform. The program goa...

They have muzzle flash

#

And recoil

#

What part feels more like gunpowder propelled weapons

#

?

vocal pilot
# wispy snow They have muzzle flash

The muzzle flash is just bits of the rails being shredded and burning up in the air. Underwater it would look like bubbles or an implosion bubble thing but without much flash because no air for the metal bits to burn, although the heat would still cause some small steam bubble explosions. I don't know what to call those really

wispy snow
#

Ah ok

#

Welp i guess i was wrong

wispy snow
#

If the barrel were to be made of magnesium then that might happen

#

Idk why they would ever do that but still

vocal pilot
#

Yeah magnesium is soft

wispy snow
#

Also burns underwater

vocal pilot
#

For the rails you need something very strong

#

Actually molten aluminium reacts with water too

wispy snow
#

Yeah as i said idk why they would ever do that

wispy snow
#

So if the barrel is made of aluminium

#

Then muzzle flash

vocal pilot
#

Eh maybe

#

Make that a yes

#

It gets oxidised but only at high temperatures

#

Anyway even if there was no fiery explosion bubble, there's still be a non fiery bubble from the friction and what not

#

It's all too complicated for my brain

wispy snow
#

Yeah same

yea railguns are weird af
