There's already many items and suits which increase underwater speed, that having Crawler Genes give a speed bonus is somewhat wasteful. Beyond that if players can at most have two genetic traits at the same time, a speed-boost in water when the majority of the time is spent inside the submarine, is objectively the wrong choice in gene selection compared to things like Moloch or Hammerhead Matriarch genes. Many players are aware of this, and crawler genes in general are either scrapped or sold as the genes are considered garbage.
Therefore: to increase the utility of Crawler genes to be a viable option, AND to add to the comically dark and violent atmosphere of Barotrauma, I propose that Crawler genes give players a Crawler Mouth which can be used to consume bodies for health-regen. It is also conceptually in line with how the other "low tier" creatures such as spinelings, and mud raptors, imbue traits which physically alter the appearance of the player and give them direct combat abilities. As well, it'd be interesting if consuming different types of orgamisms provided different kinds of buffs along with ailments. Like maybe eating a morbusine spineling body will give you an anti-morbusine effect, but then cause you to trip-out and wildly vomit. Possibilities are endless.
It would not only be more useful, but make for wild scenarios like players being chased in a dark powerless submarine by a traitorous cannibal-clown.
Here's what I argue to be the biggest pay-out : Cannibal clowns chasing players in dark confined spaces. 🤡 🥩
