it would be really useful to be able to throw knives and weapons to do more damage and throw a gun after you run out of ammo out of desperation. it could also be a way to distract monsters by bring able to throw sonar beacons. You can also play catch with a volatile fulgurium rod

Well, any item sure. But how would you even throw knives if the throw and attack imputs are basically the same. Also throwing diving knives would be nothing but an obscure "maybe useful once in a campaign" feature that will require some akward separate keybind to even funktion.
But being capable of throwing stuff like fuel rods and what not much like paint cans is something that can easily work
