CaptainSmooth Barsuk is a favorite among beginner captains. Using materials out of recycled hulls of destroyed submarines (many of which were Barsuks anyway) keeps the price of the line down. Over the years, a subculture of Barsuk-enthusiasts has formed around customizing and tuning their vessels. This vessel has been retrofitted to suit the needs of a more experienced crew on a budget. Fabrication is added, Armory is enhanced, medbay... exists. But death remains. Price has increased to 5400 Marks as additional purchases were required to achieve this retrofit.

  • Cost: 5,400 Marks
  • Class: Attack
  • Tier: I
  • Recommended players: 2-5

CPR This submarine is outfitted for Neurotrauma, Real Sonar, Enhanced Reactors, Immersive Repairs and Immersive Diving but it can be used in Vanilla without any issues. Enjoy!

This is an abomination.

It's quietly begging for death.

  • logic components visible on purpose. I hate hidden components when trying to upgrade wiring and annoys engineers as they work on features in-game.
  • you don't need to see all shelves to access them, wish there was single-shelf size version or that one could disable some.
  • Overlapping depth of shell you highlighted is all present in vanilla barsuk, so blame Undertow for those.
  • Sand and grey in different colours on purpose, barsuks are supposed to be made of scrap, you seldom find the right colour of scrap.
  • storage in ballast, I guess personal choice. Ballast space often useless and usually when water sensitive items are moved they are in special water-resistant crates.
  • if by strange decisions you mean stuff like the positioning of the bed on the right or horizontal suit locker, it's a small sub so tightly packed. There might be a better balance or compromise (ie get rid of some items) to be struck perhaps, I'll agree with you on this.
#

honestly my biggest grief in subs is locked or hidden components. impossible to wire any upgrade without breaking the hull, or just impossible alltogether

#

regarding the hull colour choice and off-shades.

#

It's definitely not your shiny pretty sub that's got a perfectly curated hull, but to me that's the spirit of the lore on the barsuk.

u can hide logic in walls without "hide in game"
target of ballast - weight of water to move up or down. u can just make ballast smaller and place crate storage in right down room
u can make color different to each part

Yeah I don't like the logic hidden in walls

#

because you have to cut the wall off to access it in game

#

annoys the hell out of engineers unless they really dont do logic in-game.

#

I was considering colours different per 'natural section' as per your image. I just preferred the assembled scrap look.

#

Btw had a look at your barsuk and it has the same sprite depth issues on the hull you highlighted on mine so defo a vanilla barsuk thing.

Oh right I thought it was sprite depth

#

yeah colour on purpose as mentioned.

#

didn't have the budget to paint scrap

barsuk make from sub parts, not from separate shells(small pieces)

says "using materials out of recycled hulls of destroyed submarines"

#

Doubt you'd get a uniform shell segment. But anyways this is just debating personal preferences at this point. Thanks for the feedback though, I appreciate you taking the time. And I will consider decluttering it a bit, I might've gone over the top with the tight packing. But subs IRL are as tight and packed as it gets so idk, if it causes functionality issues (ie annoying in-game to deal with / too close together to click) I'll definitely fix it.

taking on board your feedback gonna start refining things a bit

still a bit tight but I think better overall. nerfed cargo storage, I was probably a bit greedy at the start.

#

I think fabricator looks ok with the top part hidden? It's just such a clunky machine to place. I've got its stats a bit nerfed as its too much otherwise (so upgrades sort of get it back to a baseline fabricator).

Are you dead set on sticking with Barsuk's original size?

#

Because I had a T3 version which did offer a bunch more space without sacrificing the shape too much. A more tame expansion of Barsuk's volume could make your design feel less cramped.
As well as not "decorating for the sake of decorating", as you do all over the place with tiny, unnecessary, or outright unfitting details.

#

Actually, here. T2 is closer to what you'd need to free up enough space.

#

Faricator's position works fine in your design.

I find your subs way too bare. Lacks the claustrophobia in my opinion, they feel too 'spacy'

#

Again I think it's just 2 different philosophies. Have you seen the AP sub series? You'd probably find some of its rooms extremely cramped but the author achieves a very unique look and feel. Only grief with them is they arent always intuitive as he uses a lot of 'hidden' items with overriding texture (so you click a texture but the item's in the background and operates).

Yeah, that's the solution people often default to when they need to stick an unreasonable amount of items into limited space.
I personally do prefer the vanilla Barotrauma approach of not assaulting the player's senses on every step and not having things light up under your cursor wherever you point it.
But I also haven't made any submarines with a goal of tailoring them to hyper-modded campaigns.

yeah I'm using this barsuk with a reactor mod, neurotrauma, a suits mod etc. So I kinda need to cram a somewhat half decent medbay, provide storage for nuclear stuff, with a few more suitlockers (just suitlockers in diving area we'd die everytime before we manage to half-pressurise lol), and fabrication and deconstruction or it becomes outpost simulator with some of the other mods. And I didnt want to make the sub bigger as it's a small crew (easier would've then been to just use a bigger sub of course). Your T2 size would probably have helped to start with but I didn't want bottom right to be a proper room, more of a cramped storage area. Wish there were non-modded more options for storage item shapes to cram in corners without it looking a bit silly.
