At this time the Cleaning Downtime Activity has very little depth if at all. While there are blood stains, vomit stains, paint stains, fruit stains, and fire/explosion stains, there’s only one tool to remove all of them: the Sprayer with Ethanol. Regalis has even gone to say that cleaning is “useless” and a “mistake”
In short, Cleaning the submarine in Barotrauma could have more depth to it.

janitor job
As a start, one thing that can be reimplemented is water stains. While it is just another stain, it will add an additional constant incentive to get cleaning
water stains were annoying and clogged up the decal count
I want to BE ABLE to SCRUB blood stains, leaving behind a non-blood trail!!
I miss stains/grime/algae cum
cum
If Assistant didn’t already have the Grey Shirt Talent Tree, I feel like the Janitor Talent Tree would have been excellent
janitor learns broom-fu
Or maybe the supposed Janitor Talent Tree could combine with another downtime activity, like gardening,
a Janitor/Botanist

is there a reason to scrub the submarine besides making it not look awful?
mechanically, what gameplay does it add?
downtime activity
It should reduce the chances of getting certain kinds of sickness.
And depending on the nature of the "uncleanliness" cause an appropriate level of stress to the character.
Or at least to the bots.
and a slipping hazard
lmfao
definently
I'm just spitballing here, because I've been waiting for it to matter for ages.
slipping hazard
Oh
here's an idea
it could foul up the incoming water
if the submarine is filthy as a pigsty, then floodwater in the compartment will be harder to see through.
That way it could present a more immediate danger
Bloodstained water should attract hungry creatures.
Vomit should nauseate the crew.
just causes more vomit
stinky tolerance
so eventually living and wallowing in filth long enough doesn't perpetually cause the crew to coat every single wall in vomit
If a submarine gets THAT gucked up, then maybe it would negatively affect plants.
Bacterial overload.
And crew would need antibiotics
or develpo, idk, pneumonia maybe
I think that would be very cool to see
Ever since an unstable build had bugged opaque water, I’ve been interested in seeing intentional murky water
I love the idea of murky water and Ballast Flora spreading more easily
One aspect of this game that I love, is that you actually feel like you're becoming part of a real crew - and one of the ways this happens, is by there being little things that newcomers can notice before you mange to teach them everything.

Newguy: "Hey guys, I finished cleaning the hallway like you said. Gonna get started on the ballasts next. By the way, what's with the murky water in tank B?"

Old Guy 1: ... "Wait...
Old Guy 2: "Hold up..."
Old Guy 3: "Did you say, 'murky water'?"
Newguy: "Yeah, I couldn't see in there. Is it a bug or?"
Old Guy 1: "!? DID YOU TOUCH THE WATER?"
Newguy: "!?! Uhm!! No! NO! It was too scary in there!"
Old Guy 2: "HANS! GET THE FLAMME-"
Old Guy 3: SprintsPast "WAY AHEAD OF YOU!" *Click* FFFWHOOOSH!!

Newguy:
I just realized something; the slipping hazard is actually already implemented:
It just probably has to be slightly altered to work on the sprayer.
?
My apologies. I did not realize I typed something, must've hit my keyboard. Sorry again.
Yeah like blood or vomit having a chance to give you various negative afflictions by walking past it. So you need to clean it.
Could make cleanliness effect moral
Dive mask and suit would block the smell
tbh i think cleaning is a silly side mechanic that should remain only aesthetic.
i do not want slippery floor janitors from ss13.
the submarine is never SUCH a shitshow inside that people start treating it like such like in ss13.
Have items lying on the floor create trash bags and other garbage sprites over time that must be removed or causes movement speed penalties when moving through
unlike ss13, this game is decidedly NOT an "every man for himself" kind of thing where it can truly descend into anarchy and everyone is just trying to survive until the rescue shuttle saves them and ends the round
you have to work together and pull through, no matter how bad. no one is coming to save you.
here's the reason why janitor is actually relevant in ss13, compared to garbage piling up in here or whatever:
blood, broken lights, and damage makes the station look like a shitheap
so people will act like they're in a shitheap situation.
this only works because anarchy and trying to survive on your own is both viable and the intended way to play that game.
the janitor's role in that game is to keep things from descending into chaos.
Have cleanliness effect person transport missions
this just doesn't exist in barotrauma.
You get less money if it’s filthy
what's the reason?
the inherent reason for it in ss13 is extremely solid and ties in nicely to the gameplay and tone of the game
why here?
If you get an Uber and it’s full of garbage and smells terrible how will you react?
crew transport missions make a tiny fraction of the game
and cleanliness won't affect the players, again
the game is built around working together, nothing can change that.
We are arguing that it should.
No one is asking for a lack of team work
throwing up your hands and hoping for rescue and playing selfishly will literally never, ever work, because no rescue shuttle will come.
That is irrelevant
as i laid out earlier, that is not irrelevant at all
that's the entire point of cleanliness in ss13.
preventing anarchy.
if there is no anarchy that you need to prevent here
why expand on cleanliness here?
Getting nauseated as you walk past vomit or various poison or infectious by bleeding near blood
this more just sounds really annoying tbh.
i like ss13's implementation as a very subtle way of influencing people's decisions.
this just physically attacking you through infections or slowdowns or causing more nausea sounds very frustrating.
i mean i get it, you want to add some excuse to do something during downtime
but this isn't it.
Or simply have consequences to not having a clean sub
This isn’t that game so stop comparing them
none of these consequences are anything more than a nuisance.
it'd likely be the same thing with hunger/thirst
although even that has the potential to be more fun if you crank it up to lethal levels.
The difference is any thing that causes filth can be prevented
(and by fun i mean annoying but at least you have to engage with it)
Hunger and thirst can’t be
i have to ask though: does having to go around with a sprayer and cleaning up every little piece of trash/blood/vomit sound fun?
or does it sound like periodically tedious busywork?
you have a MUCH MORE immediately dramatic version of that with junction boxes breaking down.
literally influencing the submarine's capacity to operate at all.
