that's very sad cause i figured silent hill 2 would be one of the bigger games to get remix support

Fully fixed function bc DX7, so it should be by far the most ideal setup for Remix
Elisha has been making progress on his DX7 wrapper and more specifically, he's been doing work on Silent Hill 2
Won't work, no widescreen support and missing crucial fixes
Remix adds widescreen does it not
For example the game can't actually be played without it due to Securom protection being blocked on modern windows
EE moves the cameras to not be broken with Wide
Securom is a security risk so windows just blocks it completely
Rendering the original game unplayable
So without EE the game doesn't actually work, like at all
Unless you're on Windows XP 😛

It's possible it's not stuff that would help with Remix but Elisha has found Remix interesting in the past. So knows, maybe the big surprise will be EE changes specifically for remix compatibility (very wishful thinking)

is EE necessary, or perhaps rtx-remix on it's own could provide widescreen adaptation, etc?
EE modifies every single camera in the game so that they don't clip through things when in widescreem
If using a widescreen mod for non-EE, you'll notice the camera often clips through walls etc
Couldn't that be solved by changing the level geo via remix?
That would require changing the layout of the levels, the cameras need to be adjusted, not the other way around

Not moving them around, but cutting parts where the camera would intersect. I'm probably missing the context of the game's structure

You can't just cut parts of that geometry out, as when you step out into the hallway to look at it, it'll be all fucked up

Elisha is probably capable of it but it's not a given he'd work on it for Remix's sake. He seems interested in Remix but he's definitely doing his own thing on the wrapper side at least
I mean it's already done for EE, and remix USED to work with EE
But with the last few versions of remix it has been harder and harder to get into game until finally this last version came around and just completely broke compat
So it's clearly a remix side issue and not the game itself nor the mod

No clue, I don't touch any coding or scripting stuff what so ever so that's way beyond me
And regardless, the game did work before, now it doesn't, sounds like a remix issue more than an EE issue
But I might talk to the EE team at some point about it, but I want to have something presentable first

SPooky thing about that is that modders come and go
Having to rely on a single individual for the whole project to proceed is a scary route to go down

upon new info i have found out i was doing a poor job of submitting log files so ima go test like 4 versions of remix with the game and resubmit my log files
Good news it does still work on stable builds!
So the issue seems to be that the auto downloader downloads different versions that just aren't the stable ones?
the auto downloader uses the latest github actions builds. these are almost always okay to use, but sometimes there are regressions
i think Omen is using 0.5.1

all the recent test's i have done they havn't worked with either Silent hill 2 or Taz wanted they just hard crash both games but the stable releases run fine
i have an unstable build of 0.5.0 and 0.5.1

The remake just doesn't feel right in many perspective
The Bloober must be kept separate from the original game at all costs
perhaps there would be a way to mod the remake and create characters closer to original (assuming they're using UE5 and it would be possible to rig up meta human)

original is odd in many ways, which is kinda the goal. also some hallways feel way narrower than they should be, while in remake locations seem 'spacious' as they would be irl.
The remake has lost all the subtlety, as expected from Bloober team
pretty sure there's plenty of their own subtlely. most of the subtle stuff in original is really left to imagination often

well, I liked Observer though, and Medium was ok, although the 'maw' thing... would be better if it didn't talk at all

It's such a god damned shame that Rutger Hauer's last performance went to that game
My biggest gripe with Bloober Team is how unoriginal they are like you know they just saw the PT and wanted to make that again but also ripped off other things in the process (including using a still frame from an Indiana Jones movie and making very little attempt to disguise this fact) so anything i did think was neat i immediately thought "so is this actually their idea or did they just rip it off"

nah, I don't think they will. I think the more time passes, the more people dig up some ancient origins of many things that are considered classic
either way, considering Dead Space remake was deemed 'not successful enough' despite being near flawless, I think even with good reviews SH2 remake isn't gonna make a lot of money

on the plus side, modders of the caliber and dedication of the EE guys will undoubtedly fix such issues to make it a more authentic SH2 experience

when getting second-hand game on disc, it's really no different than pirating it in terms of how it affects developers or even publisher. unless it's some official reselling service, which I don't know if those exist

So project update, a few weeks ago Nvidia marked a bunch of my tickets as fixed, awesome! Haven't had time to test until now.
Sadly none of the tickets marked as fixed have been fixed at all, and all the issues persist as previously
However, now there are new ones, yay.
Seems like the game still manages to pick up the metalness maps for my replacement assets, but not a single one of my other textures work anymore
So normal maps, roughness, Albedo and height are now completely non-functional on replacement assets
Hmm actually no the normal maps still work too
Was just hard to see through the AI noise
So yeah, I don't know wtf is happening anymore, another huge regression for SH2
Are all the file paths set the same way between the individual materials? I had weird issues with textures suddenly not working anymore before and the only way to fix it was by relinking them through the /deps/ folder or whatever it's called
Although in those instances the textures showed up black instead of white
These are the exact same mod files from the previous versions that worked fine
I had a case with The Thing, were I would delete certain textures from game files, but they still appear in rtx-remix. seems like rtx runtime stores cache somewhere in appdata?
@flat idol is there a particular reason why Silent Hill 2 seems to have so many unique issues with Remix? AFAIK it should be a good candidate, it's a DX8 game wrapped to DX9 using a community fix that solves many of the original port's issues. There shouldn't be any crazy use of shaders or anything like that but I could be wrong

I can't say for certain - I haven't been involved, but from a quick skim it sounds like we haven't been able to reproduce a lot of the issues internally.
I wonder if the community fix is doing non standard methods for the visual fixes they use. Pulled that out of nowhere but in tech there's always a reason, just it can be hell to find it
From what I've seen you guys here have been testing various builds right? If you could narrow down which builds bring the regressions I'm sure it would be very helpful for Nvidia
The biggest issues preventing proper remixing are the same between vanilla and Enhanced Edition. Only EE-exclusive issue is that it stopped working with a recent build.

Surely they've looked at SH2 before but it's the fix that might be needed for replicating

In my tickets I've submitted installation instructions and the exact settings needed for EE in order to make the game work too
My settings disable all the new stuff they've implemented that relies on shaders etc
There could be differences in our setup versus yours. We aren't doubting the validity of the tickets, just having trouble reproing the exact problems.
Yeah I'm just curious is all! Each of us here are experiencing the problems, so something must be differing in what we're doing
yeah, this sort of stuff can be super difficult, and we appreciate the patience
I can tell you from experience, even in the most controlled environments, just handing over repros can be amazingly difficult --- I spent years at NV on our driver team, and learned first hand how hard it is to move repros even from our internal QA (who works on reproducing and documenting bugs day in and day out) back to an engineer's desk, and that's within the same company
saw the same thing when working with game studios, at which point the distance made it 10x more difficult (and we'd sometimes have to fly out to figure out what was going on)

I think you're doing the right thing by pointing out what isn't fixed, that's largely what we need
we can't promise we'll turn things around in a specific timeline, unfortunately

we were able to deliver a lot in my perhaps-not-so-humble opinion, but we're still a very small team
that said, we want to do our best to keep supporting all these mods, which is why we're looking into what specifically failed here that we can address

Hey @vagrant hazel when you get a chance, can you share your latest rtx.conf and bridge.conf files here? I noticed that they're absent from your startup guide, and I'd like to skim through. I've inferred many settings from the logs posted in the bugs, but latest and greatest would be best 👍

@weary cairn So opacity Micromaps are still enabled with these settings, which I think might be fine now? I'm not seeing that crash anymore so that's cool.
Also worth noting that these settings have a spherical fallback light enabled in order to see the environments at all
But the rest looks like it should
Bunch of unmarked textures as well from when I had to restart
So some texts won't be visible and particle fog will be messy
So just did a test again with latest and it seems like my albedo textures are loading in again so that's awesome!
However the game does now just crash after about 2 seconds of gameplay without fail
It seems like the Micro opacity map crash but I can't run the game long enough to try and turn it off haha

Silent Hill 2 has gotta be the most crash happy game to run with RTX Remix

Like the primary issue there, is that it'll be low poly, and you won't have proper normal maps or heightmaps to work with

@spice haven @vagrant hazel I have had an idea i figured i could just run by you guys, why doesn't Traggey make his version that's very faithful to the original and then when he is done he can lend us (if he is willing of course) his Remix settings and textures and we can create high polly models and make our own remix pack together Parsapk17 then both options are available of a more accurate and faithful pack and a higher polly more detailed pack
I'm not just making textures though
I'm making models from scratch
So my assets wouldn't really be of any use

ah well i guess we could just borrow the remix settings and recreate the assets ourselves then
When my mod is done, I actively encourage people to do their own tweaks and changes to it if they wish ^^ That's totally cool with me

I don't think it does. it only provides a different, more of a personal point of view, with different feel and experience. Even though game wasn't tailored for it, it still works surprisingly well in the demo, so worth having another perspective.

like, you still don't see what's around the corner when it comes to fear of unknown, but yeah, you don't get those specific moments where game forces you to go in a blind spot of a camera
Personally I feel that there's a good reason we don't let the viewer pick their own camera angles in movies
I see this the same way, it's way more effective if it's done by someone who knows what's up
I think it's worth noting that first person view in RE7 made it way out of comfort zone for some players that played other games in the series just fine
because game was tailored for it

I wouldn't know! Substance sure doesn't have .mdl support so I'd assume not.
But I haven't tried, not really interested in doing so
May be possible to convert from .mdl to a more common model format, do your work in substance painter, then convert back to .mdl if there are proper tools for conversion.
It's a fundamentally flawed workflow though, simply smacking PBR stuff from substance onto these old textures and low poly models won't look amazing by any means

I generally don't mind the new direction since the original exists (and will continue to, some way or another), so even if it ends up not going down as well, it's not much harm done really. that all being said I do think the Maria cell scene here is weaker than it was in the original. I could go either way on most of the other "cinematics" they've shown thus far, but putting a depth of field blur on Maria doesn't seem like the way to go
I can see maybe what they were going for - the juxtaposition of saying "I'm real" whilst she hazily fades off into the background due to the blur - but the uncomfortable hyper-reality of the original cutscene (which is the most uncannily real the original Silent Hill 2 cutscenes get imo) gets across a lot of the sinister ideas anyway

This is still super vague. The way each of those are represented are a mix of different things out together for a final look. The albedo, the normals, the roughness, the intensity/distribution of subsurface scattering. Unless I'm missing something, it sounds like you might as well be saying "they both use the same texture format, they both use Unreal's PBR" which doesn't mean anything. I'm fine not having the convo but it feels like you aren't able to discuss with someone who doesn't already agree with you. Personally I like having that because it's a sanity check that I'm not being stubborn/stuck without considering other perspectives

I agree with that. With many UE games there's a "UE-look". Whether it's the tonemapping, post processing, TAA, motion blur, etc. it seems like devs stick with a lot of default features instead of changing them to be more unique

Okay so, let me say this: this one is being very tough. It's probably the hardest one so far. Good news is, I've been making lots of progress these past days.
The camera twitching is gone now, which is great. It's smooth as butter. The custom camera also gets disabled during cutscenes just like my SH3 and SH4 mods, which was actually a lot hard...

@flat idol Hey sorry to bother you like this but i don't know how to get remix to generate NvRemixBridge.dmp files and apparently it is needed to help problem solve on this game
dmp files should be automatically generated whenever there's a crash.
They'll be easier to use if you're using the DebugOptimized build instead of release, but I think they still generate on release builds
they'll show up next toe NvRemixBridge.exe, in the .trex/ folder
should look something like this

and i can't use debugoptimized because they wanted me to use a specific build they send a link to so it would generate the file they wanted
what specifically was the crash? could be that the game crashed instead of dxvk-remix.
they probably built that in debugOptimized then

the story is butchered, the character interactions suck, they keep doing this thing where if you see something they changed james will stop and stare with a static filter on the screen as a shitty wink wink kinda thing and the pacing kinda sucks

they shoulda just made their own silent hill game and it could have been game of the year honestly
I played it for like two hours and think it's great. Really didn't expect this of Bloober. The only really offensive thing so far is the disgusting bloody screen you get when you are injured and the "tap A to break free" when you get grabbed. Guess that was something Mr. Bloober himself insisted on or something. It would be nice to be able to mod it out.
Another big no-no are the raised black levels. Silent Hill 2 needs proper black as its image baseline. I just set the HDMI range on my TV to limited to counter act that and now it looks good.
It does look really nice, although I noticed a heavy reliance on screen-space shadowing and some texture work can look crummy. It's also not making massive use of Nanite, if it is using it all. But overall it's one of the best looking games for sure, if you're not brain broken like me and have to poke around to find faults.

well, Annapurna is supposed to hire new people and keep all contracts fulfilled, but in the mean time there's no support it seems for developers, so even if all the projects not get cancelled, they're probably gonna be delayed
why mod it out when it's an option, among miriad of other options. you can basically go HUDless if you want to for full imerrsion
also something the game asks you to set up the first thing when you launch it, because monitors differ. it's gets pretty dark by default, darker than original
but then again, I think it's darker with raytracing on

Yeah, I was just blind and didn't see the option. There is no option however to just have the red cross from the original, which is what I would have preferred.
Still the default bloody screen is a bad choice and aesthetically one of the biggest issues for me, it would be nice to have a default option that's less ugly
But having beaten it overall Bloober did a very good job. Probably the best they could have done with their team size and budget. It's a good way to play Silent Hill 2 today if you don't want to emulate or play the old PC version.

they even added the cross on top of vingette, but yeah it should've been an option to have just the cross or nothing at all. after all you can easily see if James taken damage and how severe by the way he looks
Most of the mods are either "the new one sucks so here's the old one" or "the game runs like shit use this and it might work better" and i just love that for us
