#Windsurf slow and using 100% cpu for long periods

Summary
Windsurf slow and using 100% cpu for long periods, I tried different models today (Gem 3 Pro High, K2.5, 5.2 Codex High, and Opus) all behave the same.. they max out the cpu and takes forever to go thru the tasks (in Code mode to review and update a PRD file)

What’s happening
it seems to hang for long periods (different models, same behavior)

Expected behavior
it should think for a few seconds, and begin implementing the subtasks,

Steps

  • new prompt sent
  • the Cascade windoes begin the 'thought' process and displays the different preset messages 'swimming', 'navigating', 'sailing'
  • the cpu in my system monitor elevates to 100% usages.
  • it takes several minutes for a tasks it use to take several seconds only

Environment

  • OS: Linux Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS
  • Device: Intel® Celeron® N5095A × 4
  • Windsurf version: 1.9544.26

after trying, it seems the better behavior (only one model tried), but now it seems the 100% cpu is short lived, and the task completed under 2 minutes or so...
still not as it used to be last time I used on Saturday. the lower performance is highly visible compared to my last session (Saturday)...

steps I took:

  • Extension: disable all installed extensions
  • closed windsurf
  • restarted my linux machine
  • after restart, opened windsurf and resent last prompt
  • took longer that two minutes to begin the task implementation, but once it begin, it completed in lest than 1 min (eye balling)

The only thing is now my extensions are disable.. I would like to use them if we find out they are not the one triggering the performance digradation..

I should mention one thing I remember this morning when I begin my session, the MCP linear app asked for reauthorization, which I did. Should I try removing my connected MCPs?

Do you have many MCPs? Or maybe they have many tools. Try disabling them and tell me what happens when you do.

will do.. I currently have 'Cloudflare Docs', linear (removed just now, I can live without it), and github.
I will restart windsurf and try asking a few prompts again..

I can see a normal performance as I was used to before, no hanging for a long periods at 100% cpu, I only removed the linear mcp.

Should I try enabling extensions again?

Yes, go ahead and try if you want. Lastly, I’d like to see your Windsurf diagnosis to analyze whether there’s anything that could have an impact.
