Overkilling a capital ship at a fork seems to cause the next sector to keep using that sector's capital ship until another sector change happens.
As seen in the attached screenshot, I am in sector 77B yet the capital ship is the one from 76

I dunno if this is overkill or just a timing issue on the forks hmmm

I know I've seen something like this happen before Fleet update, but never managed to have a solid way to reproduce it

oh ok so disabling does swap it out
