A lot of info is in #1037058089779744809
Xfce or Mate?
Thanks
why'd you want vanilla mate or xfce they both look outdated, better use linux mint mate/xfce or zorin
they "look outdated" is a bit general, both of those have theming
many prefer them for there workflow
although tbf i dont think xfce is any more performent than kde
Kde optimized plasma for once some time ago and it's (almost) as fast as xfce now
It's almost as fast while having significantly more features in their os and default apps
An example is big linux, based on manjaro with highly customized kde only uses 500-700mb of ram
I don't see the need to burden the devs when extra spins. It's very easy to install additional preferred desktops on Ubuntu and reboot. Fans of those can create spins if preferred once this one is on solid footing.
With the VOS Core edition coming out, this seems like it could be possible. I really like XFCE as a desktop or even Cinnamon, so this could be possible again. https://vanillaos.org/2023/02/03/vanilla-os-core.html
An introduction to Vanilla OS Core, a minimal Vanilla OS base.
the only problem would be that someone would need to rewrite the VOS apps in GTK3
I think that kde edition will be the go to for low end machine. Latest iteration are on par if not lighter then xfce
I still like XFCE for lower end machines, since it uses GTK while KDE uses QT. It would be nice to still have an XFCE variant for those on lower end machines who want a more GTK centric experience.
I wasn't ditching the idea for an XFCE spin, to everyone is own, just saying that the first programmed spin will be KDE and that will already be very good to fulfill the low end need. From there whatever other spin will be born will be very welcome I think
I would be in favor of xfce too because I got the habbit of it. But I'm more curious about the Vanilla OS Core version, it's still based on Ubuntu?
Yes. It's essentially a minimal install with no graphical environment
