Hey Invokers! 👋

🔥 Last week's challenge was lit 😉

📌 Check out the top submissions here: ✍🏼#1259999577499766824 message

🚀 This Week’s Challenge 🚀

This week, we're practicing inpainting and focusing on epic landscapes. Start with an image of a landscape, whether it’s a drawing you’ve done or a real-life photo you’ve taken. Then, inpaint something into that landscape: a fortress, a city, other structures, people, natural elements, or whatever inspires you! Here’s an example using a photo I took last weekend, where I added a fortress.

Guidelines:
1️⃣ Begin with an image of a landscape / environment.
2️⃣ Use inpainting techniques on the unified canvas to add new elements into your landscape.
3️⃣ Feel free to use any additional inputs (eg. IP Adapters) or refine your images using other tools.

📬 Share your submissions in this thread, and remember to upvote your favorite submissions with emoji reactions. We want to see your best attempt for each creative idea you have. Submit the one iteration of each creative idea that you are most proud of. Can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Happy Invoking! invoke

Here is a photo I took a couple of weeks ago. see if you can find what I added.

Can't tell!

Good challenge to learn this. I would normally use photoshop to do this type of thing. Hope I improve by the end of the week

Going to throw out there that inpainting with scaling is broken for 1.5 models so that makes this challenge more... challenging.

This doesn’t look like inpainting. The pictures are not the same with an added horse. Even the trees are different.

mellow kraken
#

Strange. It was inpainted.

#

I did once the inpainted horse was on the scene, run it a second time to tidy up

#

To blend it all in

#

So inpaint. Then second run to tidy up.

#

So I refined the image.

#

We are allowed to refine according to the instructions.

#

@nimble geode

#

?

#

Using any method. So a second run would fall within the rules.

#

The horse was inpainted

#

I had a landscape minus horse. Inpainted horse. Then run it again to blend all the elements.

#

Minor changes around horse are refining.

nimble geode
#

In my opinion the end result is a totally different image. Might just be me.

mellow kraken
#

Understood. I just tried to be logical in understanding the instructions. IP adapters could alter the image also.

#

I thought the important thing was the instruction to inpaint

rapid carbon
#

The concept behind inpainting is that you're only altering a small area. I don't think there are rules, per se, but doing a coherence pass over the whole image isn't in the spirit of the challenge, IMO.

mellow kraken
#

Ah ok.

#

So how would IP adapters and any other method strictly adhere to that precise small area concept. Bound to alter image ?

#

The overall image is pretty close to the original.

nimble geode
#

You would mask the area that you want to alter so the rest of the image remains the same.

mellow kraken
#

Ah Ty.

nimble geode
#

It is much harder to just change one area.

mellow kraken
#

Got it. I will bow out of this challenge.I may have inadvertently done a wrong thing.

#

Plus typing on my phone sucks 😄

mellow kraken
#

One question. How do you refine the image if nothing changes?

#

If I only refine the inpainted area it will lack cohesion.

#

The inpainted area could look overworked.

#

The rest of the image remains stoutly unchanged. One refined inpainted area

image I took a couple of years ago. After putting the fisherman in I took it into photoshop to match colours better. all around the inpainting the image lost a lot of detail so I added some texture to the the overall image and then removed it from the water.

I used Juggernaut-XL-v9; would it work better with a model for inpainting?

I haven't found inpainting models to yield better results, but that's just me. Here's a good older studio session on inpainting that might help! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32hyxQQfkW0

In the fourth event of our live stream series, Invoke Studio Sessions, Kent covers how to use various inpainting and outpainting techniques in Invoke's Unified Canvas. He goes through different techniques and methods for adding specific components to images, and refining images to meet your creative vision.

That confirms what I thought, but I have very little experience because this was the last feature that would work for me because my MAC Studio would not load Patchmatch and then there is a second problem with torch that has to be fixed manually. I thought that maybe for SD 1.5 models you needed to use an inpainting model...

Canvas and 1.5 models are experiencing some issues at the moment, like hard edges.

octopus->vegetable soup

Doesn't have to be one!

#

1️⃣ Begin with an image of a landscape / environment.

#

And if it does, I don't care!

#

Not everyone wants boiling octopus.

#

But who can say no to a delicious pot of vegetable soup?

My thought when a challenge has guidelines, following the guidelines is part of the challenge. If you do whatever you want then there is no need for a challenge to begin with. It’s fine to do stuff outside a challenge and the outlet for that is the Outdir.

#

Challenges are good for learning a new technique. Then the artistic component follows outside of the challenge.

#

I stopped doing competition photography because i found the rules around competition homogenized all photos and stunted artistic growth
