I was always taught to think in genres, but I've come to realise genres just describe influences, not the actual piece of music

Like psych rock is just rock which was borrowed from blues etc etc

I find it a little more insightful than labelling a thing as such. It feels creative that way

I think what defines an actual genre is if it is repeatable and mainstream. It actualises into a labelled definition

Like how english evolves

Definitions change if people adopt it in the mainstream. Like how literally and figuratively now mean the same thing as per modern definitions
