i don't think there's any way to reverse a sample in Move currently - imo that would be a rather simple addition that could expand the possibilities of what you can do with samples greatly

After laying down a track this week, I was craving the option to reverse a sample.

There are so many other features on the Move that are more complex than playback mode (one shot, looped, reversed), so it's funny that within a menu the option isn't already available. If this feature could be introduced sooner than later I will be able keep sampling strictly on the Move and not ruin such a great work flow. Right now samples recorded on the Move via the mic/line input/USB-C have to be exported to reverse them in a software and then they need to be loaded back on the unit. Just to try out a reversed sample on a track. Multiple cue points within samples would be completely awesome as well, but let's start with the basics 🙂

What are you reversing all these samples for?

I don't use it all the time but it's one of those things that's important to have when you do want to use it. As a sound design tool it's useful for making familiar sounds into something new, for example something simple like reversing a piano to make a pad with a slow attack. It's also really useful for percussive elements. If you think about it, a shaker or a tambourine is sort of like a hard attack percussive sound, followed by a reverse slow attack sound. Reversed percussive sounds can add nice pumping, breathing, grooving feels to a track, especially mixed in at a lower level. On a longer time scale, a reversed sound can be a nice buildup into a new section of the track. It can also be an interesting tool for generating new but related melodic parts. For example take a melody part, reverse it and run it at half speed against the original, and something new and interesting emerges.

Still can't believe this isn't done yet... 😦

about that...

Even then I think doing it without having to go to a webserver would be great (and to do it non-destructively)

balmy zodiac
#

yeah it would

They would need to add that feature to the drum sampler which means an update to Ableton

balmy zodiac

this is ableton

ableton move

#

you mean live?

# balmy zodiac you mean live?

I would assume they mean Live. To have continuity between the two platforms Live would need to be able to accept whatever Move can create, so since the version of Drum Sampler in Live can’t reverse samples within itself, it may require changes to both versions of Drum Sampler for the request to be made possible on Move

I think this is an example though where technically it wouldn't have to be updated in Live. The reverse command in Move could simply do a destructive reverse of the file so when you open it in Live the audio clip on that pad is already reversed.

But then you couldn't automate it right

#

I don't think they'll add a reverse mode if you can't automate it

royal smelt

that's true. that would need something like the rate parameter in the octatrack where negative values reverse the sample so you can smoothly go from forward to backwards. could be added as one of the playback effects

And couldn't this simply be in the new menu that appeared with the latest beta and the "Slice" mode?
Because there's now a menu where there's only the "slice" option, but it's conceivable that it could be used for other destructive operations: reverse, crop, destructive FXs...

Reverse + Loop + Auto Warp = yes please

(maybe more useful than auto slicing.. I never use auto slicing on anything other than 15-45 minute sample recordings and move can’t handle sampling that long anyway.. if you load a sample in, mind as well just do it on note or live since that’s the only way to get longer samples in)

We now have Sample Reverse in our latest Beta (Move 1.6b1)
