Well, the only public stories are the "recommended" ones you'll find on the c.ai stories website. Any stories you create will appear under "my stories" but no one else can see that but you. You can share the links here though, so in that sense, they are public. But that's it so far, as stories are still in beta.

If you don't share the links, then they are kind of private.

Hmmm. I don't remember how I prompted it (I don't save prompts). But, these three characters are actually set in the same world. And for the three of them, User is a detective who is on their case. So it most likely affected how the story was written too.

Considering this is about stories, one would think I could be creative and come up with a story I want to tell. But if I have an idea for a story, I can't really tell it. The reason why is because the AI doesn't follow the directions I provide about a plot within the premise. Instead, it just generally makes up it's own plot.

I suspect you can see the premise in that one, right? Compare that to how the story actually plays out. They are radically different. It does produce a story, but it's a random story, rather than the story I was hoping to tell.

Now I get it that AI generations are not going to be an exact science. Results will vary. But it would be nice if I could somehow specify certain key events (including their order of occurrence) and then have the AI produce something more or less along those lines.

Maybe my expectations are too high. But since you asked, I just wanted to mention it. It's just a little hard for me to create Story ideas I have right now because of this issue.

I attempted to make a Nutcracker AU story where the user plays as Fritz who joins Mouse King in rescuing his sister Clara from the evil Sugar Plum Fairy and Nutcracker.

Small disclaimer. I was experimenting with having more than 3 characters with a specific plotline. For earlier stories, with just 2 bots, it's the Mouse King who talks first for the muticharacter bot and it switches to the Nutcracker, and other stories it starts as the Nutcracker if there's a separate Mouse King bot. As a sidenote, I apologize for the buff Mickey Mouse Knockoff. Please ignore any heart shaped windows and portals.

Same as Typo's. Also, would love to regenerate chapters based on the previous chapters new choices. Maybe even keep the old ones too? I know I mentioned it before, but I wasn't sure if I made sense.

Also, would it be possible when a bot is talking to have its second name appear in the picture if applicable? Like replace or include it next to the original name? It's not just for worldbuilding bots, for example like when I use a Nutcracker AU bot to play and speak as different characters, but a good number of bots on c.ai don't have names. They have labels, and then the name is in the description, greeting, or maybe in the premise. Sometimes I like to use random characters for story ideas, not necessarily use characters from fandoms or my own, so I and other users might not have the name memorized. So when I read the story, and the other name comes up, I get confused. For example, which character is Azreal? All three characters are labels of what they are, like Dragon Prince or Elf Prince.

For regeneration, for clarification just in case, I just meant for users, not like a remix for creators. Because when we first finish a chapter, after that, that's when the next chapter generates. But once we finish all the chapters, whenever we reread it and choose new choices, the chapters no longer generate because they're already there. So having multiple versions of one story would be cool!

So, as far as a "choose your own adventure" story goes, a lot of the fun for me is that I get to go back and choose different things to see how it could play out differently. It doesn't work very well when the chapter doesn't regenerate based on the different choices made in the first chapter. It's like totally different scenes.

For example, in one Nutcracker AU, in the first chapter, readers could go up to the Sugar Plum Fairy's castle or go underground to the Mouse King's place. Originally I choose the option to go up to the Sugar Plum Fairy Castle, where the final battle happens and everything. But if I choose to go down to the Mouse King's place first, users find the "real" sugar plum fairy that's been captured. Totally different setting, route, and potentially changing the story a lot. A captured sugar plum fairy was not in the original story at all, and it wasn't in the premise. So I'm curious how that'd play out. I would say a bunch of stories I had were that way - that the ending of one chapter and the old start of the next would not always match if one chose different options.

Your update is a HUGE improvement. This latest story has a clear plot and is much better aligned with the idea of my premise. The AI did take significant liberties, but that is to be expected in AI generations.

Two issues I did notice:

The transition from Chapter 2 into Chapter 3 was jolting for me during my run through. The plot moved from being on the hunt for the dragon in a remote village in Chapter 2 to then suddenly being back inside the throne room in the main city defending themselves from a dragon attack in Chapter 3. So chapter to chapter transitions are one area you may want to look at some more.

Then at the end of Chapter 3 of my run through, the story ends on a cliff hanger rather than an actual ending. Perhaps we need an option to apply ending? This would enable creators to ensure a proper ending does happen.

On a positive note, while the dragon was not actually a character in the story, none the less the AI managed to generate his likeness in the story art very very well.

This is a really solid improvement over the earlier version. The narration and story flow are vastly better.

I think most of the stories generated right now have cliffhangers. From the AI's perspective, based on its training data, likely cliffhangers are a desirable outcome. This is because many web novels and TV shows it has been trained on end in cliffhangers. The novels are published in serialized fashion and often use cliffhangers to keep readers coming back. But with Stories on C.ai, there isn't (yet) a way to publish in a serialized fashion, however supposedly that feature is coming. 🙂

It takes some getting used to. Just as with generating images, videos, and music the outputs from AI are not always what we expect. So it may be necessary to go thru multiple generations in order to find one that is to your liking. I had a similar reaction as you, initially... thinking that I could tell a story. But really, we're just prompting stories and the results don't always match the vision in our heads. But just as with any prompt, there are things you can do to try to guide the AI to the type of result you want by ensuring you tell it that. Just have to experiment with it! 🙂

Just did a test and I got more or less an ending to two stories in a row. It's still a little abrupt, but both became standalone stories and the primary issues are resolved in both of them too. Not nearly as much of a cliffhanger as I've seen before.

I'm not sure if this was pure luck or because I included the following at the start of the premise or a little of both. Maybe give this a try.

Catharsis is payoff of a story.

When you generate a story the system decides how many chapters it needs to tell it.

If it's one you'll see a standalone.

The ending of the story will be at the end of the last chapter.

But every chapter will have an ending and most likely a cliff hanger.

As we have 27 different endings for each chapter (3 choices of 3 options)
You can replay multiple times and get a new chapter 2 everytime.

Which is a continuation of the choices you've made.

BTW (hint) the limits only apply on new stories.
New chapters of existing stories are not counted.

The Story's main page will be different for every user.

For example.
If I played story 1
Chose A,B,B
And Typo ( hope it's fine using you an example) played same Story and chose A,B,C

Both of us will see different chapter 2 of the same story (different cover Image too)

FEEDBACK: Something I've been noticing... It appears that once a character has appeared in a Story for the first time, it seems that Stories retains an imprint of that Character, including its visual image, voice, etc. Subsequent changes to the character are then ignored in favor of the imprint. So for example, in the roller skating story just above, one of those characters, Lily, should have used a new image I uploaded to her two days ago, but instead it used the image of her from prior to that. I did previously do a story with her a couple weeks ago. Similarly, I had an issue with King Elric's voice in another story. Attempts to update the voice don't work, as it continues to use the original voice from the story I first created with him.

I know that sounds odd, but its 100% true and you can likely validate. I can provide any links you need for both.

Getting a high quality base image (from a PFP - usually poor quality - not yours, but in general ) is a very time consuming and expensive process
so I do it once per character.

same with upgrading the audio quality for narrative story telling.

I think the problem with some of my bots (like the dog emperor or the dog empress) is that the system knows humans and animals, but it has a harder time with things that don't exist. It can do the cat emperor more easily because there is another anime character that looks more alike.

With these candy monsters, it knows what a panda is. It knows panacotta. But I guess no one has animated a pandacotta before. So it doesn't know how to handle it. I assume this is why they often fail. It sometimes goes for the easiest way. Like in the animation I had posted where the pandacotta turned into a panda too, with a panacotta wiggly skirt.

Bots. They don't eat, don't rest, and they're still lazy. 😛
