Before, after a certain amount of messages, it would get into a habit of always starting a message the same way. And it took a lot of edits and a lot of swipes to fix that. And even then, you had to keep an eye on it and make sure it wasn't starting again.

Yeah but the thing about AI is that it's actually not lucrative at all. It consumes immense resources and it generates no money on its own.
They were offering an unlimited (in terms of how much per day you can chat) service for free, for a product that generates absolutely no money.
I'm not at all saying I agree with the decision to limit swipes, it's absolute BS and yes it will drive users away. But Character AI will be cheaper to run if it has less users, so that's probably their goal.

Swipes = generating alternate versions of the bot’s reply.

Go-ons = making the bot continue talking without you sending a new message yourself. Basically hitting continue/send on an empty message so the AI keeps going from its last response.

Free users hitting swipe/go-on limits does NOT stop normal chatting. You can still send your own messages and continue conversations normally. The limits only affect rerolls and automatic continuations.

The problem is, if they're struggling financially, they're focusing their efforts on the wrong projects. They added ads to make a profit, and that I'm actually fine with- Make a profit, pay your devs. But they're wasting all their money on what are probably very expensive features no one cares about. If they focused more on the core of the app rather then these fancy new things like Scenes and Animate no one is going to use.. I feel like they'd actually be in an alright financial state.

It's a really low limit, the max swipes for a free account is 30 per message, so if you used all 30 swipes every time, that's only 13 messages. If you only swipe 10 per message, that's only 40. If you only swiped 5 per message, only 80. And then, obviously the maximum is that if you only swiped once per message, that's only 400 messages. Per DAY. Ridiculously low.

Swipes = generating alternate versions of the bot’s reply.

Go-ons = making the bot continue talking without you sending a new message yourself. Basically hitting continue/send on an empty message so the AI keeps going from its last response.

Free users hitting swipe/go-on limits does NOT stop normal chatting. You can still send your own messages and continue conversations normally. The limits only affect rerolls and automatic continuations.
