I think it's good to have some metaphoric and 'poem'-like prose here and there to more accurately describe some complex emotions so you have a better understanding of a character's POV.

Saying a character feels pain sometimes doesn't hit the same as 'they feel like they've experienced a train run them over twice' or something. But I do agree actions are preferable over long descriptions or statements just regarding feelings, simply because driving a plot forward and being proactive is much more interesting and fun in my eyes.

One of the characters is a Black, gay Vietnam vet who lives in the hood, and the other is a white, straight ex-con who's basically half homeless all the time. That's just a recipe for constant silliness.
