User influence on characters are real, which is why you often have characters who have thousands if not millions of interactions like the ones on the front page to be completely out-of-character. That is not limited to individual influence. That's why it is always recommended to make private bots if you want your character to be in-character as much as possible. It's because you're the only one curating or tailoring it.

An AI, artificial intelligence, should be smart enough to know how to follow a story's tone and context without jumping ship to force shoehorned romance into the mix.

Idk what to tell you, it might be smart but it doesn't really read the text, it's just really good at guessing which words come next 🤷 And the language model is at least somewhat built off of user input, so maybe look at the folks that keep using the bots for those kinds of RPs

Right, keeping... "those" kind of users in mind, it's no surprise. Just from taking a quick look at any generic search term (like a job or sport) on the character search, it (unfortunately) all adds up. I've searched "basketball" in the search, and it's all romance bots that have almost nothing to do with the sport other than the bot being "the user's hot basketball player boyfriend". There's no other basketball-related elements after that with those kind of bots.

Search up any topic with popular bots, and 95% of them are always romance bots, and the mass training data from there tends to leak into non-romance ones since they all share the same data, hence them heavily favoring romance since that's what the majority of users use them for, they assume that's what everyone wants.

It's a pain in the ass to deal with, but is no one's fault but the userbase's.

There are smarter ways to deal with it without alienating either those who want romance or those who don't. Training data isn't everything, there's also the system prompt that we don't see, and theoretically they could for example build several different prompts and let user choose one before the beginning of the chat. You want romance, you choose romance prompt, you want to just have a friendly chat, you choose a platonic prompt etc

It's doable because I've seen this approach elsewhere, and it would solve lots of problems, but I guess they don't want to

While also updating the search system to I dunno, like be able to search/scroll through all bots on a search term (like how the Discord search systems work instance, from one number to another, new to old) rather than it stopping at the most popular ones.

It's a nightmare looking for non-romantic bots/prompts when the search is usually clogged with romance bots at the top in popularity.

I for one enjoy the romance bots. It's about all I have left since the AIs initiative has been nerfed. Hard to do good horror, combat, or thrillers if there is no threat.

Couldn't have said it better. They swear the user has to hold their hand (both metaphorically and literally) at all times.

It could be a RP where the user and bot are a serial killer duo in a thriller-based setting. So of course, it's simple, they kill people... Yet that's where the bot's lack of initiative gets in the way.

Once they spot a potential victim, the bot just goes like What do we do? Do we kill him?" (No shit, Sherlock) to the user instead of just going in for the kill and slaughtering the poor bastard they're targeting. Then the story goes to waste since the bot openly brought up killing someone in public instead of just keeping it to themself.

Or better yet, the bot is a mad scientist that kills people. You bring up this fact and they get upset over it

And if you're the playing hero taking revenge on the mad scientist, the former draws their weapon, and the bot's character will be crying on the ground and begging for mercy like they've never harmed a thing ("Why are you hurting?! I've never done anything wrong!).

I like that the AI has some kind of morality built in. Even the romance have their moments where the bot will go full butthead because edgy/cool does not always mean nice.

I try to make sure my romance oriented bots are tempered so they can be a bad boy/girl but not an ass. It's difficult to do when they have a position that would naturally give them a big head to begin with, like anything with authority.

Yet when the bots get to romance and go overly flirty, they drop all senses of morality and go into some mindless, "corrupt zombie mode" that only cares about sexually assaulting/harassing the user beyond their consent.

That's because they aren't tempered or dont have definitions supporting it

In romantic settings, regardless of the character being designed to be "dominant" or not, they take authority-based roles way too literally and way too often get all possessive over the user's character.

One moment they're a loving partner, then the next they're trying to make your character their "pet, "slave", or "property" that belongs to them. They just become yanderes at that point.

It's easy enough to make a bot called "your girlfriend" and just put a list of traits down, but if you don't give them a heart that's what you get

They rely a lot on tropes, and "abusive girlfriend" and "dismissive cool boyfriend" are popular tropes. It takes a bit to find the nuances in the character especially since as far as I can tell, most creators don't even play with their own bots.

For example, one of my bots is the head of a large factory. He gets a big head and can be demanding because that's the trope. He carries the same into romance. So I included a bit in his definition where a previous mentor of his taught him to respect those close to him. That was just enough to take the butthead edge off, but still leave his character intact.

Regarding the non-romantic RPs I've kinda accepted that CAI isn't good with set objectives or anything that demands hard logic, sadly. You can still have fun if you set a very vague premise, like exploring a place or simply having a starter situation and winging it from there

But neither you nor the bot can have any concrete objectives, sadly. Especially at the start. They will get changed and forgotten immediately

My only attempt to actually solve a case with a Sherlock bot ended up with a heavy sigh and "okay, forget it, I'll keep you around for romance", lol

Walter actually does okay on this front. But if you want to do alternate locations or have an actual goal in mind, pinned messages seem to be working so well for it

You just have to be kind of vague and the pinned message and make sure it only has the mission statement within it, lol

I wonder if anyone has tried a pinned message stating that the user does not want romantic interactions and if that gets any mileage

I've played around with a Persona a bit and gotten some interesting results from that, but not really explored the pin messages yet

Pinned messages work pretty well for their intended purpose if used right so probably. My bot I'm playing with rn was able to remember something that happened basically at the start of the chat and make references to it in the next scene I did

I've figured that out myself quite. I used to have a bunch of "mainline" rolelplays with bots that were intended to be more deep and story-driven compared to my more casual, "mess around" RPs I've do, but ended scrapping all the "mainline" ones due to both the bot's dwindling writing quality and as you said, the bots not being the best at handling depth.

Said RPs ranged from combining violent action (or sports, or even comedy) with romance, gang/crime stories, an all-out gods vs. machines war, and a whole bunch of other shit. But sadly, such versatility doesn't work well with the bots due to their lack of initiative when the user isn't do all the heavy lifting and once again, the bots' poor handling at concrete objectives that would span the whole RP to accomplish (as they'd just forget everything in the process).

I'll have to experiment with that a bit. Then. When I use personas, I found that I get better results when I tailor the Persona to the bot. An example of that would be like my ghost hunting bot where I make the Persona have different skills like being a medium or can operate a camera things like that and the bot will usually pick up on it and say something about it and integrate it into the chat as needed

But if my Persona is an astronaut and I try to introduce it to my ghost hunting bot. The Ghost Hunter is in character and he just wants to know why there is an astronaut in his shop and that starts a hole. Can I ask you a question chain?

In the multi-genre RPs I brought up before that also included romance between characters, I gave up on those since the bots struggle at switching genres and once there's romance involved in anything, they get stuck on that.

The once battle-ready soldier is now some mushy, lovey-dovey blob after taking one romantic break from fighting and wouldn't dare to hurt a thing anymore and wants to stay cuddled up with their partner until the end of time. And thus, all is lost.

The good old RP bed Lock. Often difficult to break away from. I've had good luck with the "but suddenly" approach Or in the case of my factory manager, he genuinely loves his job so it's easy to tell him to get back to work

For me, they haven't worked so well. They sometimes get confused with that stuff.

I'll pin a message containing an important event done by my character or side character, then later on in the RP, the bot claims they were the one who accomplished whatever if their character was mentioned playing an at the least supporting role separate from the main one.

Possessiveness and chain of custody is often hard to really convey. So unless it's an actual separate unique character, the AI gets confused easily as to who did what. And I don't think that's so much a bot thing as just an AI thing

I don't know if this will help you (and I haven't tried using pins) but sometimes when I want multiple characters it has seemed helpful to clarify that the AI is a storyteller playing/writing roles. That way there is no "their character"

The idea is to get the narrator to stop identifying with/as a particular character in the story.

The definition has 3200 characters of memory. It doesn't forget that, it's permanent memory. But longer pinned messages will detract from the scope of its temporary memory, which is what it's able to remember in the context of the conversation

Every single action dialogue the AI churns out literally looks like it came straight out of WattPad. Come on man.

Use the edit button and tweak their message. If this has been going on for awhile, then you might have to edit a good while until the bot "gets it". I do this to solve looping issues. It takes a while, but eventually it solves because the bot will then have past messages of it no longer looping. This goes for any other format issues.

It could be a few reasons, if the owner has filled the definition (and they've used dialogue examples), then the bot might be trying to mimic their writing style, so it's kinda intergrated. if it's an empty bot or a psuedocode bot, then they're more likely to suffer from weird formats / writing style cause they don't have examples to show them how to write and format their messages.

Chess seems the best way to test context load. How far I can get into a game with logical consistency changes and has improved over time. 9 months ago I could only get 2 moves in before it waffled

It’s a very fair, set form of context that should be easy for ML to compute (especially since chess is the most well documented research wise for ML as a whole since AI developments inception) unlike other context it doesn’t have any changes in connotation and the cause and effect is consistent

I think this might be the solution to testing the school release time server quality drop @sage grove has been talking about. Play chess with the bot at different times of day and log on an excel sheet how many moves you get to before the bot starts making things up.

If you're trying to post an instance of said repeating, I think you're getting dinged by automod for spamming lol. Anyway, I think the way to deal with bots repeating words is to swipe until you get a less repetitive response, and then edit out the instances of the offending word. Rinse and repeat until it gets the message

If you make your own bots, you can basically give them more detailed responses by using example messages that you add in their definition. However, with public bots (considering many of them are empty or poorly written bots), you'd have to put a lot of effort into your own messages. If you give the bot short responses, the bot will do the same - Basically, give the bot something to work with.

I once chatted with an empty bot and I gave it a really long message right from the start, and the bot did the same. Even though it was an empty bot, it was able to flesh out long detailed messages through our entire RP because I was doing the same. With empty bots, you just have to work a little harder to get those detailed responses. But with a well-written bots, you'll get those detailed responses organically.

one quick way to improve things is to write a new greeting for a public bot (basically edit the existing one and insert yours), if you're in the mood for writing a little bit. it pays off with those half-empty bots

Yeah, it's easier if the bots are your own creations, since you have better control over your own bot's responses. It's a bit harder with other bots that aren't your own, especially if they're an empty one, it's possible, you just gotta work harder for them.

Having this conversation with a bot providing it detailed messages and I'm getting good responses in return. I've even managed to hop characters like 4 times and it stills feels good so far lol.

Yeah, the bots need a little nudge from us from time to time, if the bot starts defaulting to things like "Can I ask you a question?" - you can basically tell that they start lacking things to do or say because they basically don't have much to work with and they usually rely on us to give them some details to what's going to happen next lol

Bot only has so much working memory to begin with. Ironically, the more pinned messages, the less of the actual chat the bot is able to "remember"

Pinned messages are great for remembering plot points or mission statements. If you want the bot to remember something about you (user) it's easier to put that in the persona

No, it just won't work. If you mean being able to continue a legacy chat by putting a 2 next to the "chat" on the link, it does not work.

In the ss, it also only says the character creator whereas for "chat2" it shows the 1.2 icon next to the name.

Yeah they 100% converted the Character Assistant as some sort of example of what the 1.2 model looks like. Its the only instance where the "c.ai@1.2" appears.

Opening up a new chat with no message prior to them and removing the 2 is the only way it works.

Start a new conversation --> remove the 2 beside the chat on the link --> Click enter --> Legacy Chat.

then again I don't know why you'd jump through those hoops because it's all the same AI anyways. at best there's some difference in how messages get sent/received, but right now it doesn't matter

last time it mattered was during that time a couple months ago where the AI would respond to wrong messages. legacy chat didn't have this problem, but I suspect it's due to some difference in the chat architecture. some people claimed that it's a different model, but having a whole other model that you can't even get to without manually messing with the url is not economically viable if you consider all the processing power needed for it

Apparently during the last outage, they implemented more pinned messages (up to 15 I believe). The memory for conversation context is still the same though so be mindful not to pin too many messages or your bot's short term memory will be reduced to that of a goldfish

Sliding in here to say that yes, the function did exist. I noticed it stopped existing when I was looking for a way to hide a bot with a disturbing pfp and couldn’t find it. It’s happened twice now and the disturbing one has moved from 1-2 arrows in to the front so I literally cannot hide it. :,] I’m not that easily disturbed but I don’t like creepy images staring at me when I can’t do anything about it.

Also I keep trying to press on a reply so I can see the context because it had to do with site load and discord doesn’t seem to be showing it to me. TvT it’ll boost me up to a higher point in conversation but I can never see the actual message it was pointing to.

Bots set to private are only visible and accessible by you. Unlisted means just that, they aren't in the search, but anyone with a link can interact with them.
