I'm already in bed, so I'm keeping it short regarding the tracks: there are things that can't have competition. Building a second set of train tracks next to the existing ones isn't feasible at all, so people that own tracks have a complete monopoly and abuse that. Trains in the UK are insanely expensive because the companies can ask for the money. Trains in other similar countries with a similar (or even better) service are way cheaper (look at Spain, Czechia or even Austria, which has expensive trains). And if you fund things properly (which you can only do with taxes), you get a very good service out of them. The NHS used to be very good, because it had a lot of funding and was managed well. Now it isn't, so it's not that good anymore.

The government isn't by default bad at everything, they are just bad at it if they don't care about it (look at German highways and trains, cars were very important for the ruling conservative party, so the highways are great, trains weren't important, so the system is bad)
