Do we start coding for GSOC organizations now from the previous year or do we wait until there announced
You need to wait for the official announcement on February 19th, 18:00 UTC then you need to find a project to start communications and prepare a proposal for the project. Please read Contributor Guide to understand more about GSoC 🙂
Got it okay I was told to start working on basic request beforehand so I guess that would start on the 19th, thank you will do
Basically you can (contributing always helps increase applicants chances of being selected), but 2026 Orgs will be announced on February 19th, 1800 UTC ☺️
Is there an optimal strategy for applicants in the early phase: deep focus on one organization vs exploring multiple organizations first? What are the pros/cons mentors commonly observe?
Please read the Contributor Guide and the FAQ to know more about the GSoC program
🙂 Yes, sure. I’ll attend all the upcoming contributor sessions. I missed this one.
Hi, I'm having some trouble with filling in the "Organisation Profile". 1) The whole form seems to reset itself every couple of seconds. If I'm not quick to fill in a section it resets itself before I can save it. I've managed to fill in most of it regardless by being quick, but something clearly isn't right. 2) For the "Social Communication Methods" section the only options are "Blog", "Social Media - X", "Social Media - Facebook". We don't use any of those. I would just ignore this section, except it flags it as a required field (though I can still save and it says 100% complete). Seems like a weirdly restrictive list of options too. Am I missing something? Thanks
not really depends on what part
It sounds like the form resetting is likely due to a session/state issue (e.g. autosave bug, browser cache, or a script error causing the form to re-render).
And the limited “Social Communication Methods” options look like a config or validation issue on the backend rather than something you’re doing wrong.
Quick question to narrow it down:
Which browser/device are you using, and does the same thing happen in an incognito window or another browser?
It happens both using firefox on a linux PC and on chrome on an android phone
And, just checked, same thing in incognito mode in firefox
Please try to register your Org by using only one browser and 1 tab at the time, this error can be caused if you are using the same profile with more than one tab (the second tab won't work as the first one is registering the changes)
If the error persists please send us and email with all the details to our support email: ✉️ gsoc-support@google.com
Since it happens across browsers and devices, this strongly points to a backend or frontend state bug rather than anything on your side.
I’d be happy to take a closer look and help fix it I’ve dealt with similar form/reset and validation issues before.
If you’d like, feel free to message me privately and we can go over it in detail .
I'm having the same problem. What I'm doing is writing everything outside the gsoc page, copying and pasting directly there. It's working for now.
Hi everyone!
I’m new to Google Summer of Code and open-source contributions.
I’d really appreciate any guidance on how to get started and find beginner-friendly issues.
I really appreciate any help you can provide.
Hi everyone,
I’m Diksha, a final year Computer Engineering student focusing on full-stack development and problem-solving.
I’m excited to engage with the GSoC community and learn from contributors and mentors here.
oh so gsoc will start on march 16th?
Please check the channel pins for program details
Any tips ... this is my first time
is there a more detailed article or a video?
Almost all the resources provided by Google have been linked in the pinned texts
Please follow them for an overview
If you have any other queries you may ask them here
ok thank you, i will look into that
Hi everyone
I'm Vedanshi from India, mainly here to network with curious developers and to be a part of the gsoc 2026 community. I saw many new people like me here, pls do connect to share any insights.
Hi all,
I saw that this year’s GSoC has more focus on AI/ML and security projects.
I’m planning to contribute from a data engineering / ML infrastructure angle (Python pipelines, data validation, testing, light orchestration) instead of pure model work, to add value early.
For folks with past GSoC experience: does this approach generally align with what orgs expect, or are there pitfalls I should be aware of?
Hi , I am guruvar
A student preparing for Gsoc 2026 ,with experience in python, data analysis (NumPy,Pandas),data visualisation,SQL and basic automation
New to open source but highly motivated to learn and contribute consistently Happy to start with beginner friendly issue and documention
Glad to be here !
Hi All, i'm Italo from MeteorJS ☄️, an org who submitted for the program:
For those new coders taht is looking for tips, guidance and etc, I see many recommentions to watch this video , there you will understand why, how, when to apply
My recommendation here is:
- Choose a project you think is good to work on (have fit with your skills)
- Get CONTEXT from what is the project priorities (via community, mantainers dm), the project organization will provide list of project ideas but you can propose your as well, but have in mind that a prpposal that match with the OSS(open source software) priorities will have a bigger relevance in the submission moment
- Be familiar with the codebase, if possible try to contribute with something, docs and units tests is a good way to start
Be familiar with the codebase and show yourself as a proactive developer to the mantainers is the most important IMO, the submission for GSoC just open at March, take this time to focus in what matter, know the project you want to work on
This is the most important, take a time to get context about the project and build a little relation with the maintainers, they will remember you in the moment of the porposals
Many project have content about the internals code that facilitate a lot to start to coding, like this for example
oh, italo, but what happens if I spend this time studying the project but I'm not be selected for the GSoC?
In this case, continue contributing fot the project you choosed and use it as a portfolio and network (at this moment many developers already saw your power) 😉
Hi everyone! 👋 I'm Muhammad Subhan from Pakistan. I'm a MERN stack developer with experience in React, Node.js, and MongoDB. I'm really interested in contributing to GSoC 2026 projects in this organization. Could you please guide me on beginner-friendly issues or where I can start contributing? I’m excited to learn, contribute, and work closely with mentors here. Thanks in advance for your guidance! 🙏
Hey Team, I need one help with the GSoc 2026. Is there a way that "Organization Name" can be changed?
While setting up at my end on my GSoc 2026 profile the name that got picked seem to be wrong and due to this I am stuck on not moving forward with the Organization Profile complete.
If I tend to complete then the name (text) and the URL (website URL for Organization) may not match it. So I am not sure how can I change the name. Any help is appreciated.
Hey team , I want some guidelines for linus operating system, as we all know that for GSoc we should have hands on experince on linux . So I have to install the linus operating system on laptop if someone have install it plases tell me where you see the steps .
try contact via email, they are faster there gsoc-support@google.com
This is a not a support channel. All support questions should be sent to gsoc-support@google.com
Try to install in vm
dm me
You can either use VM or Dual boot
Or just switch to linux
tho I reccomend trying it out before fully switching to it
recommend you to start by a debian distro, like popOS(my favorite IMO)
Hello everybody. Actually I want to contribute to open source and the thing is I only know c language and nothing other than that but I have also covered advance topics such as file handling, dynamic memory allocation and all . So what do you all think about my situation and also suggest some advices.
Hello mentors, I have completed my python and will start GitHub I want to take part in Gsoc . Can anyone mentor help me out it's a request
Hey everyone, I want to ask a question regarding GSoC eligibility criteria. They say that GSoC is for new comers and for someone who is not already familiar with open-source. I do have some decent experience in open-source and contributed to the organization to which I'd prefer to work.
Although, all of my contributions are the part of my intent get familiar with their codebase so that I can efficiently contribute within the GSoC contribution period.
Am I still eligible or not?
Hi Vedanshi , nice to meet with you
Hi guruvar, nice to meet with you
Hey

Thanks. I attended the live session for a bit, but I will wait for the slides to be shared. I had to leave the session because the constant chat notifications were really distracting. Google Meet provides no way to disable them.
Hello there I was wondering if there is a Google Summer of code discord server.
thanks for session @cunning ice
Is there something like GSOC for getting used to doing open source but have full time jobs? :/
I believe most probably not
Maybe you could do a small gsoc project over a longer time period? if you have ~an hour a day over 12 weeks, that's almost the 90 hours needed for a small project. Anyone know if 12 week long small projects are possible?
I missed the contributor talk on the 4 feb , can anyone tell me when is next one?

Hi everyone being new to this group can anyone guide me how can I clear my doubts about the organisation that I want to contribute. I mean should I join a separate discord server for that
Mam , Is there today have any session ?
i couldn't attend the talk how can i take this information iam in the final year of cs ?
and i want to participate in gsoc 2026
may be u can look at these resource, it will help : ) @floral monolith
Hi! I’m learning open source & preparing for GSoC 2026. Happy to be here!
Hi, already started searching for projects have a few shortlisted. Which one are you looking to contribute in?
Hi, Can anyone tell me if i didn't contribute in organization and select their project for proposal is there any chance that they select me for their project, as I have good understanding of that project and have enough skills to work on that .
you have a time, just start
and talk to the mentors that u interested in this project
okay, should I need to contribute in that project only or on any issue related with the organization project
the project or the issues related with are the same
the best is talking to the mentors they will help u and direct you
Thank you sara I will connect with them
take in consideration, it is also better to show your mentor that u understand the project well cuz they have a lot of messages like i interested in this project
No Problem
Hey where can we talk to mentors?
it depends on the org u choose
check their website and guidelines, they say what is the best to connect with them email, slack,... etc
Cool thanks sara
No Problem
Should we only be active on the organization’s main communication platform, or should we also be active here in this channel?
in the org
Guys what happens when you contribute to a project and it not get selected in gsoc. Do mentors help you or they just ignore you
And how to choose project wisely which project can go in gsoc??
Please share your opinion guys
u can talk to your mentor if they interested in the project u can do
there is no wise the the selection of the project, u match your skills with the projects and select the most suitable one
Means your time will be wasted if that project is not selected but get learnings from that
there is no waste!
u will learn a lot from people who have a lot of experience your mentors
, also learn how large scale projects are written
u will learn a lot overall
Once 2026 Organizations are announced on February 19th at 1800 UTC you need to review their profile in the g.co/gsoc and review the Contributor Guidance there you'll find the instructions to apply to that Org. (every Org has a different process) 😉
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
hy
can anyone suggest top 5 gsoc org for a beginner (python devloper)
u can search at gsoc website and choose the most suitable one for u
there isn’t anything like top 5 or top 10. if gsoc website feels overwhelming, you can lookup 'gsocorganizations.dev' to filter orgs based on your skills.
I am currently in my 2nd year and I have basic knowledge of python libraries and ML then what are the regions I can target in ..
the regions that most suitable to your skills
Anyone can give me the 1st step insights for applying for the right company and mentor in GSCOC
the right organization is a decision you have to make based on your interests
as Mr. Stephanie said, and i think these resources may help u
@gloomy hatch
Is gsoc a team based or individual?
Individual
Hey, when will organizations list for 2026 be released?
if i am working professional will it be tough for me to get selected to GSoC? is GSoC better than doing a new job?
It's just a side hustle, that helps students get started
Feb 19th bud
so working professionals typically dont get accepted?
You should check their eligibility criteria out
Halo everyone my name is arfah i want to apply for gsoc 2026 and its feb 12 today i havent contributed yet. Should i start now or is it too late to invest time and contribution?
U should start now to gain attention of the maintainers
It will help them to easily recognise u during proposal selection
Ok Thank you
Sure
can you please share some guidelines to start
Hi everyone I'm a complete beginner. I am currently doing Undergrad in Computer Science. I was really interested in participating in Summer of code but after seeing the level of people applying for it makes me to leave everything because I who have very basic level with c,c++ and python. What can I do ,Where do I start and improve and make my self eligible and confident and qualified enough to be chosen. Any help will be really appreciated
Hey friends how can I apply for gsoc ?
Same here 😓
Let me know if you find out.
Has anyone here contributed to gsoc before?
Please share how your experience went and if you have any tips.
Anyone with an AI tech stack?
Are Merged PR a on org repos a strong checkpoint for gsoc?
Hey!
hlo guys
Hey!
Hi everyone ,
Since the GSoC org list will be released soon, could you please share how contributors usually get started and what I should focus on before applying?
Merged PRs definitely help because they show real contributions and understanding of the project. But from what I’ve learned, mentors also value communication, consistency, and engagement with the community — not just the number of PRs.
Please check the pins for some helpful resources
Idek
Yes. Applications for contributors will start soon.
Check the pins for details of the timeline
Okay thank you
Thanks for sharing your experience with me.
So, basically judged on everything.
Hello guys how can we contribute do we need any coding experience or not ?
Or will they help us teach about coding?

You need to already be able to code to take part in Google Summer of Code.
@somber basalt @somber basalt time for today meeting?
Lucille's post mentions the timing as
Nope. Prepping to be the best mentor for my contributor 🔥
same... the luck factor is making me anxious lmao
Low-key what do you know about programming
goat
bro bout to go against the norms lol
js/ts full stack as long as its in web domain
I think I'm cooked I only know c++ fundamentals and problem solving
the time zone makes me always miss these
r u in college?
Yuh
w year?
Yeah it's a W year so far
Oh I'm a freshman XD
theres only so much u can do to mess up ur year lol
ah its chill then
if u r really good in c++ there are some nice rare orgs w have low compitition
dont ask me their names... the website already has them... js saying
Wow that's good to know I will try to target those. Do you think knowing arrays loops time complexity and functions is enough though. I still didn't learn OOP or data structure or any of that complex stuff
i dont think u should go for gsoc now then...
I forgot to ask which year are you
array loops alone dont make an application uk
Yeah I also thought the same I just wanted the experience
3
That's cool
might aswell fork a repo since u r at it
reading code alone w put u way ahead
Isn't that faking it though
elaborate
Like fork a repo mean I copy someone's code and paste it on GitHub
So when the contributer asks me to do a specific project I will be like " I copied this guy's code I can't actually do anything"
ok lets step back a bit
Am I missing something 😭
yep u r
when u contribute to an orgs project
u will have to fork it
so idk where u got that half baked info from
there are some good videos on this online... that should clear or doubts
there isnt much content to learn... any video is fine
as long as its in ur prefered language and u get it
okay thanks for the advice
Hey chat!
Sup
I join the meeting meeting, but no one is there .
the meeting is at 2300 UTC (not your local time). It starts in about 4 hours.
join us in ~14 minutes (3pm PT) for our last organized GSoC Contributor Applications tip virtual talk at meet.google.com/nwo-fcmv-xpn
That was an amazing session! Thank you.
Can anyone describe the key takeaways from the meet that I missed?
Me too!
Pretty crazy experience for someone born in 2006 😆
nice, definitely check the contributor guide, focusing on the proposal part really helps
I can send you the slides
starting as a freshman is a massive head start, honestly just try some small bug fixes first
I think I'll just do it next year I only know basic problem solving with arrays, loops and functions
smart move, gives you a whole year to build some cool projects first
Why do I feel like you're happy you get less competition lol
That's nice!!... Also a quick tip-
As a mentor, we don't expect contributors to be genius at DSA or have expert level intuition for GSoC
Just have decent experience in building full stack apps(most orgs need js/ts contributors)
Mentors are supposed to breakdown the complex project into smaller manageable coding tasks, so that contributors don't feel intimidated.
Also, do note that, mentors aren't supposed to code for the contributors.
But of course you can always reach out to them for help no matter how simple the task maybe....
Do check out the choosing the right project from the GSoC guide! It's super helpful
Okay thank you
lol nah i'm not even competing, just saying a year of prep makes it way easier
Ah alright then thank you for the advice bro ❤️ ❤️
I'm not going to lie very good and helpful community here 👍👍
glad it helped man, good luck with the prep stuff
That would be really helpful
glad you're liking the vibe, people here are usually pretty chill
Don’t be like that. You don’t have to submit the proposal, but at least try. Who knows? In a week, you might enjoy it and get serious. Dropping it until next year would just make you procrastinate.
yeah fair point, even just for the experience it's worth a shot
yeah it definitely is
best of luck
thanks i was disappointed when i browsed through previous years organizations and realized most were out of my league
honestly some look super intense but there’s always a few beginner friendly ones
i found some beginner friendly onces and looked around they are good
but the competition might be tough
yeah for sure, but showing you can actually build stuff usually beats everything else
yeah well ill try nonetheless
to find something ill be a good fit for
Hey, can anyone help me, I want to apply to gsoc this year but dont know where to start
@ice select an org based on tomorrow's project list, contribute to it and gain trust of the mentors that you can finish the project. Then send proposal to it.
i couldn't join the meet can someone share the slides with me
best way is to check the orgs from last year, helps you narrow down which tech stack fits you
Thanks! I was wondering if it's too late to start contributing now, or do I still have enough time?
I understand, thanks!
Generally it's too late, even I'm in the same situation, I started in Jan end i still feel the same, but tbh open source is slow.
But don't miss out the opportunity to apply, we will get some experience if we wanna try for next year.
not really though, the official org list only drops tomorrow so everyone is basically starting fresh then
But those who are contributing in those orgs, they have much maintainers trust ryt. They have the edge.
true but thousands of new people get in every year without having an edge like that
I see, would it be better to target an org that is new this year?
Yes thats also, Ig we will never know unless we try it.
Yep, definitely
can i get the slides too
Thanks
eyad offered the slides earlier, might be worth asking him
yes
Uhmm do u know anything about git or version control
Selected organisation will be announced today, right?
yeah 18:00 utc today. any specific orgs you looking at
Gemini Cli is on the orgs list, but the invite to the ideas list is not accessible
try checking their github discussions, portal links are usually buggy on day one
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/organizations
GSoC 2026 Orgs Live Now !
here is the list of th e orgs it s live'
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
no chromium!!
wait really? that's actually wild since they're usually always there
No DeepMind! 🙁
Yup.
definitely a weird year for gsoc without the big hitters there
They were part of almost every GSoC.
Indeed. I can see random new entries.
⚠️ 1st warning ⚠️
Please do not post unofficial information in the channel about GSoC, this is very confusing as you are not part of the GSoC team.
The official GSoC Page will share the official list of the 2026 Organizations today, February 19th at 18:00 UTC
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
yall know any tool to check only 2026 orgs?
gsocorganization(dot)dev is still not updated yet
Why isn't chromium on the list this year? Or has the official list not been released yet?
This is strange.
Lol im going through the current list
OG's have returned
But no chromium is a shocker
I dont think so... 185 orgs are already out
I dont think they take more than that... I could be wrong
This is sad; I wanted to contribute with Chromium this year.
Already started contributing there?
Even GitLab doesn't exist.
Sad
I've made some individual contributions, but I want to participate with them in GSoC
Damn... thats a bummer
Did they post something related to gsoc? Like they have applied or nah
No, not at all. I haven't seen anything about that yet.
But I saw that GitLab had already submitted an application and announced their projects, but I don't see them on this year's list.
hey guys
I see
Well this time its about ai, security and sm related to it... maybe thats why they didn't make it
But I see some OGs orgs that doesnt fit the above description either
which language has the least compition
Its weird
Reach out their maintainers or mentors
Mandarin... most spoken language but outside China very few can speak it
hey i am also in socialize
where are you from btw
oh i am from jupiter btw
Holy
I will
nice to meet ya earthling
Big as hell
U too guy from joopeter
have ya cracked gsoc earlier
Yea... if things don't turn out well... maybe they might guide u to other orgs if they like ur work (im just guessing idk it works that way lol)
Like if they know other orgs that suit ur tech stack
Nah
Hey guys, my project idea for Apple Swift was accepted. I will apply to be contributor for it
How did you went about that? May you please elaborate?
I have been talking with the Apple Team and community for over a year. I found my niche and work that needs to be done. The work got acceptance by Swifts team. So I proposed it as project for gsoc
Congrats!
Thanks. Yet I am only half way there. They still need to approve me as contributor
cool stuff @rotund meadow
I'm unable to find communication channels for orgs.
Some of them have email list, a link to X.
1 year... thats some dedication
Bro deserved it
Can someone tell me how to proceed with the orgs which I chose?
Which orgs did you choose? @mortal trail
Do we need to start creating proposals for our applications right now or we wait until March and just mingle with the different organisations for the meantime?

ok thank you
AI orgs
DId any orgz have replied regrading the project detailing ?
Anyone working on SYnfig as a gsoc project?
I think some have published project ideas
What's the communication channel for Google CLI?
is gsoc only for college student?
no
There should be one
Imma send u the link if i find one
Thanks pal.
It would be really helpful.
No problem
🤝
Just wanted to comment and say how challenging it is to identify projects to contribute as there are so many GSOC orgs doing so many exciting things. 😁 Good luck to all open source contributors applying for GSOC 🙂
I am newbie here can anyone tell how to find mentor and contact them for my project idea
Hi buddy, I think GSoC doesn't work like that, the organizations have projects and ideas that the contributors (us) can fix and solve.
Above u can find the list of organizations and match with one is in the same way than your project
How can I ask my mentor for opinions on changes to align with organizational standards?
Until I see the organizations says "don't contact with the mentors in theirs priv emails", so you have to find the correct ORG according with your categorie of the project and try to comunicate with them on Discord or their prefer channel
VideoLAN ORG prefer channel??
@dusk kettle Please try to find the information yourself. Answers to your questions are located here (I just looked it up myself): https://wiki.videolan.org/SoC_2026/#Submit_your_idea
Feel free to try submitting your idea there, and contact them on one of their three channels of communication
THANK YOU MATES@solid jacinth@mighty garnet
What's in the link that you've shared?
Information to submit new project idea for VideoLAN, and their communication channels
This is from the org itself. You need to go to the orgs and get the info
Aight, but how to do that?
Click on an org
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2026/organizations
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
Then on view ideas list, done
The even harder part is to get accepted for a project
Yup! They favour communication over GitHub repo.
Idea list mentions that.
git or neovim would be cool
Thanks blud! 🤜
Seriously jenkins is a project as well
Have they too popped up in orgs or what?
I have a doubt regarding registration and log in.
I could see a log in button in GSoc website and am able to sign in with Google account, but it shows a message to register. But there is no register button in home page.
Does we have to register during the proposal period only? i.e is 16th March?
Definitely DO NOT contact mentors via their provate emails or social channels. This will irritate them and you likely won't get accepted into the program with that org. In a couple of orgs (out of the 185) the org specifically says rach out to the mentor via the email provided for that mentor. but that is very rare. Most of the time they want you to use their public group chat channel whatever platform that might be.
You can't register until March 16 1800 UTC
In my experience Its best you get to know the people, contribute to the project, so you have a chance for gsoc. Also discuss a timeline with mentors in detail.
What are the chances of getting accepted into Gsoc if you have not contributed to OSS before and do not have any Co-op/internship experience?
@cunning ice Some orgs have not mentioned a link to their community groups.
How can we communicate with them?
Use what is listed on their contact us section of their Org page. Also many list it on their Actial Ideas list. If the org has a Contributor Guidance link on the bottom of their org page it will also shoe their contact methods
So which org did you choose?
Thanks!
Any advice for getting into Gsoc? I assume getting into bigger projects like Git etc.. are impossible probably with the amount of candidates applying to those.
Engage with organizations early, discuss project ideas with mentors, and submit your proposal well before the deadline for feedback.
If you don;t engage with the organizations in the next couple of weeks (the sooner the better) you won't be accepted into GSoC 2026. Those conversations are about 70% of their decision on whether to select a person, the proposal is about 30%
Thanks, I appreciate the advice.
Althought looking through the projects, there are many I am interested in but not sure about which one to focus on.
that's a decision only you can make : )
Whats the best way to understand the codebase, because at times looking at issues I feel lost. How do you know where to look? How do you understand the entire large part of the codebase there? I feel this is a problem I have always had when trying to do Open source contributions that I never understood, if anyone here has prev experience might offer some advice?
you aren't expected to understand the entire codebase, that's something you'll have learned by the end of the GSoC program
Hello, I have a bit of a question regarding the age requirement.
I am 17 years old right now but I turn 18 on the 7th of April. Does that clip me out of the eligibility criteria for registration?
Sorry, I should've read the FAQs.
You can’t register as per guidelines you must be 18 years old before march 16
yea it was close
How many numbers of orgs can we apply and number of applications possible for gsoc ?
I think you can only send up to 3 applications. That could mean an application per project for 3 different orgs, applications for three different projects under the same org, etc.
some prefer to communicate on discussions part in their repo
also couldnt find any communication links for gemini cli
but im on it tho
how do i resolve this profile not found error, anyone?
Refresh.
its still same
damn
im having a really hard time finding an org... its either a bad documented repo with really vague jargon filled issues
or its a really crowded org
js/ts knowledge ain paying off
Lean C or C++ to have a better chance
Dont look at their issue page, they should have a list of gsoc ideas which you can pick
good time to migrate to that rn?
i did look at that at some orgs but they are crowded... the ones that arnt crowded / are new arnt accepting any prs regarding it... more like only discussing of how to approach it (weird tbh)
What you mean how to approach it? So is there a project idea or not?
project idea is listed but i noticed one of em asking if they can already approach and they said "Right now we are open to discussion on how to work on this project"... they want code work to be done later once they accept proposals (thats gonna happen way late)
also i "might" pick it up... ive some oops knowledge in c++ idk how much that will help
never tried c++ development
thats the normal approach. You are supposed to write a timeline and make a good submission before you start the actual coding
they arnt accepting any code work rn... not even small submissions regarding their project idea
ill send org if u want
then dont do code work?
nvm u dont get it
crap... should i really switch to c++ repos rn
man better safe than sorry
lets ball
can someone mentor me for this gsoc2026? as am very new to this altho i got experience in opensource contribution
Usually its the other way around. You find a project you like, talk with mentors, make a timeline, propose, submit and hopefully be accepted
Also if you are new to gsoc, I suggest taking a project with 90 hours as you have a higher chance of being accepted then
I have a shortlist of projects (narrowed it down to 10 after going through each orgs idea list) that I’d like to contribute to but I can only submit proposals for 3 based on GSoC rules. To help narrow this down, I’d like to reach out to the orgs (following their policy) and try to learn a little more about the interested projects to help me narrow down my short list and get a feel on my relationship with the mentors. Does anyone have suggestions on how to approach this effectively? Thanks!
Reach out to them how they state you should reach out to them. If they have a Contributor Guidance link on their GSOC org page (the link at the bottom) then that will be very detailed on how they want you to reach out. Also most orgs describe their process in their Project Ideas list.
ok i picked a few projects. How do I find a mentor?
in the org guidelines, they put contact methods
Hi team! 👋
kkssharma-4 here (BSc CS 3rd Sem)
Started GSoC prep: github.com/kkssharma-4/gsoc-2026-prep
Looking for "good first issues" in Python/ML projects
Any beginner tasks available? Thanks! 🙏
Anyone else here looking at CERN projects?
MERN? yes
I contributed to the Google CLI repository and I even sent an email to the maintainer for my selected project. I didn't hear back from him neither there is any communication channel for my query. Let me know if someone has a solution?
nah I mean CERN as in the Large Hadron Collider guys
I wonder what the general scope of projects that people are interested in. It's cool how GSoC has so many different orgs under their belt
What did you write? Did you tell them how you would approach the project?
Usually projects have mentors listed. If not make sure to write your approach for the project in a discussion channel/email or whatever way they prefer
Most importantly, dont just say: hi, I wanna contribute but I dont know how.
Instead do this:
I am X, interested in Y, here are my steps/tasks in order to successfully finish project Z
Shared tha with you in the DMs.
Anyone here down to collaborate and grind out together for this program ?
yes if you interested in any project with c++ i hope we collaborate together ?
Yeah I am looking into projects particularly c++/c or python
that is good
I have added you as a friend
how can i be part of gsoc if i know only like 2 programming languages 🙁
just a stupid freshman
it isn't about the number of programming languages, it is about your understanding of the basic concepts
how do you write proposals for the gsoc? im not aware of how to write the best proposal or how to do it efficiently? also i dont think my vocab is great great for tha
Please check the pins for Contributor Guide. In the guide, there's a section on tips for writing proposals and there's two sample proposals too.
Hope that helps you!
Ok I will give it a try!
anyone particpate in any Past years in Gsoc(c++)?
Hi guys, I was wondering who has done the Google Summer Code? I just have a few more questions about it and I want to know from a person who did it
Hi guys , did anyone try SYnfig
Check synfig
I'm new too 😅
hieee
Can someone help me in fixing this error?
Please, provide more information. It looks like there's no module named "server" in current directory, which implies either you don't have all required dependencies/files or you are in wrong directory or you haven't properly initialized the environment.
How do I initialize the env? And what are all the dependencies to installed?
@patent jungle
@patent jungle this the file structure
Ur server.py is inside tensormap-backend
U need to cd tensormap-backend and then run the server.py
Okay let me give it a try
Virtual environment?
Yes venv is activated
It didn't work 😞😔 it output file not exist
After activating venv did u install dependencies? Can u share image of the logs ?
What do mean by logs?
Is this clear?
Error messages i meant
@prime pagoda Would you be fine with dm? Wouldn't want to clutter the channel
Ok
yes this is not a conversation the whole channel needs to be part of, thanks.
Hello @cunning ice , I am a previous year GSoC participant, currently I am not a student and I have decent amount of contributions( also kn terms of PRs) in various organizations , I am interested to work a project in a particular organization my question is Am I still. Eligible to participate?
no if you are no longer a student then you would need to be a beginner and you are not if you have had continued experience post your previous GSOc program
Thank you for the clarification.
So if I am a student and already have some experience working on open source, am I eligible for GSoC?
it depends on how much experience. You need to be an open source beginner which means less than 2 years of experience in open source.
"Hi everyone! 👋 I'm Shivam, a final-year Computer Science student.
I’m a Full Stack Developer (MERN) with a strong interest in Interactive CLI tools. I’m excited to contribute to the Gemini CLI for GSoC 2026, specifically focusing on the Interactive Visualizer.
If anyone has suggestions for 'good first issues' that would help me understand the project workflow better, I’d really appreciate the guidance!
Looking forward to connecting with the community!"
I already know 3 people who want to apply for gemini cli. The competition is really high on this one
I really want to understand abt the projects given by the tardis rt collaboration....astrophysics is pretty confusing
But as shirvam Sharma said the good first issue to understand the project workflow?
Can you direct me towards any Good first Issue?
Dear GSoC Admins,
It has been six months since I graduated. As per the GSoC requirements, applicants who are not currently students must have less than two years of experience in open source.
Could you please clarify how these two years of open source experience are calculated? Is it counted from the date of the first pull request created in an open source organization?
In my Github profile there are commits related to my assignments and personal projects.
The best issues to work on are the ones that YOU are must interested in. Take a look at the codebase, creating your own issue and solving it is pretty good for getting noticed by orgs.
I would like to know the answer to this too because I have just recently contributed to some open source projects with IBM quantum and I was wodnering if this will impact my application
Find issues that are not boring. Things that sound cool or where you understand the complexity and fall in love with its difficulty
I was just browsing some projects from previous GSoCs and I noticed that one of the projects I’m interested in already has work done previously by another participant. The project description is identical and looking at their report, it appears to be well aligned with the scope, so it appears to be an already “solved” project. Is this normal?
do u mean that u find the same accepted project?
A soft reminder for GSoC Admins
Yeah, the same project available this year completed by a past participant
hmmm, the best thing u can do is to ask the org about it
I'll email the organization, just found their contact preference. Thanks!
Good luck!
2 weeks left for submissions to start!
How many proposals is everyone planning to submit?
Actually a slight follow up question. In the case when multiple proposals are submitted, how do they get evaluated?
Hi I wanted to know if they're exist some communication channels for gemini-cli for Gsoc 2026 , I couldn't find the one for it
A soft reminder @cunning ice
email gsoc-support@google.com with your specific eligibility questions not here.
Okay I will do it. Thanks for your reply.
You can submit up to 3 proposals during GSoC. You can submit 2 to the same organization and then 1 to another organization or 1 to 3 different orgs, that is your decision. The selection process depends on every Organization.
I have a question, last time an organization selected me. But I was not accepted by Google. What's the reason for that?
The orgs rank all of the proposals they want to accept. Google only has a certain number of contributors we can accept with our budget. So many orgs could ask for 8 people but we can only allot them 5 or 6. So they wanted more but they can't all get the number they want.
Is there any way that we can know how many slots that the org will take?
no
Last year Apple got 4 slots
It isn't a constant number, each year the number is different
i think it is unknown
So do I
Hey guys, have you guys managed to talk with mentors and write a proposal?
Yeah, I started writing details down for the proposal and have spoken with my mentors. Getting myself acquainted with their codebase and created a first PR too 👍🏻
Haven’t dived into too much detail on the proposal yet since I’m still learning about their codebase and the “why” behind the project idea.
I have written a draft proposal one project and haven't heard anything back yet but I've been working on issues and trying to make PRs for other projects in the meantime
Am kind of giving up 😭😞 trying to understand a codebase in an org but still asgi error will not allow me to run and test app before fix a bug
Please is their any help you can do ?
this channel is mostly for broader queries related to the program and not the orgs , someone from the irc from the org of that project might help you out like eg slack, zulip, etc
Hello there,
Someone please let me know do we have to prepare some project prototype solving some real problem and then ready a PPT presentation and present in GSOC like any online hackathon?
Or there is some different workflow?
GSOC isn't an online hackathon. Read the GSoC contributor guide on g.co/gsoc to understand more about the program
Okay I got the idea how it's completely different from hackathon.
Please let me know this as well that after selecting the organization where I would like to contribute.
So while writing project proposal do I have to explain,
How I am good fit for that project idea — as project Ideas are listed there.
Or
I have to explain my own idea regarding some real problem solving project?
During May to Sept, I will probably be in singapore. So should I write Singapore or my home country for the location for GSoC period. And will I get stipend for singapore location or my home country(as both has diff stipend amount listed) ?
Can't I submit all 3 proposals for 3 different projects to same organisation?
Hi,
Can make maximum of 3 proposals ?
While we are coming close to submission phase, the questions become worse and worse
You should code from one location (whether that is your country of residence or home country, etc.) to keep things simple. You must be eligible to work from any country where you will be coding which can cause additional issues with your Visa or Payoneer as they do very specific verification about this.
You can submit up to 3 proposals during GSoC. You can submit 2 to the same organization and then 1 to another organization or 1 to 3 different orgs, that is your decision.
is there only one person assigned to each project?
I actually have plans to visit family in the USA this summer and I’m expected to work there for a little bit of time (maybe a week or two). I have work authorization to work in both US and the current country where I reside (where I plan to do most of the work). Will this be an issue? Thanks!
There are no Team projects in GSoC, one contributor per project only.
Additionally, is there an option to decline the stipend and still participate? I saw that historically this can be arranged. Thanks!
Remember that you should code from one location to avoid issues with your Payoneer acct, also, you are responsible for paying taxes in whatever country you are in.
Yes, you can decline the stipend after receiving the GSoC acceptance notification.
Thanks for the quick response!
Hello, the org I am applying for has a very open ended project (find out what would improve this project - ish), the warm up task was fairly easy to get through, whose deadline is 8th (tomorrow). I sent an email regarding a possible proposal given the warm up task, but it might have been too late on friday. Should I send a proposal anyway, or wait for a response on my email? Sorry if this is a trivial question.
that's is up to you,. Orgs have deadlines that they expect to be met so you can submit it to be sure it gets in before the 8th
Never seen the deadline of 8th? Submission starts on 16th
Totally not overwhelmed. One 'past contributor' made an entire compiler for a language in 3 months 😭
Is that normal in GSoC?
Can you elaborate on these "issues" please? Is there anyway to arrange to work in 2 coutries?
Guys need DSA note for begginer i am primarily use python language only
hey guys im a first year cs student in dublin and just overwhelmed looking at programs, i dont know where to start, what to write and honestly im not sure im even qualified to apply.
I have some experience in c, python, and touched on js,java and go but i dont "know" them
Good for you. All the best.
Did anyone got an update on gemini cli orgs ?
I know more than 5 applying for gemini cli
Good luck to all! I have a feeling my proposal will also be one of those last minute ones due to having a ton of content haha
Make sure you talk with mentors constantly
Us bro 😭
Yep have been chatting with them frequently!
Did you discuss your proposal with them?
So far yes, the mentors do a great job knowing what to prioritize so having many conversations with them are highly recommended
Please Where can I chat mentors for my proposed organisation of application
Please reach out to Orgs by using their preferred contact methods listed in their Org page. Also, most Orgs have a Contributor Guidance (the link at the bottom) which is very detailed on how they want you to reach out. 🤓
Ok, thank you, 🙇
I suggest having your proposal ready and discussed with mentors by March 16. Orgs dont really like last minute submissions
is there a separate discord or specific ways to communicate with mentors for google gemini-cli ? cant find any information on their gsoc official page. @somber basalt @cunning ice
I strongly recommend NOT applying for gemini cli as the competition is very high
Was anyone in contact with people from Gemini CLI?
Hi everyone!!
Just a quick heads-up that tomorrow is the last day to apply for HackUSF 2026, a 24-hour Build with AI hackathon, organized by the Google Developer Group at USF! We’ll have challenges, speakers, and sponsors from major companies like Oracle, Google, Microsoft, AWS, and many more.
It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself, build your portfolio, and stand out to these companies.
📅 Date: March 28–29
🔗 Register here: https://hackusf.com/
‼️PS: It’s beginner-friendly, and you can participate even if you’re not from a tech or engineering background! 🚀
hi everyone , i am umar from lahore pakistan as its my first time to applying for gsoc can you help me in this ?
@ancient palm take a look, it will help
Active course? What's that server about
You can just go through the official docs of GSoC. You'll understand it much better
It's an arabic community, combine people who have interest in computer science and also help people in open source and a lot of other benefits
u can see this repo to know more details
https://github.com/OmarShawky1/ACU
But do they only talk in Arabic or English too?
tbh in arabic, cuz all the community arabian
the repo in english, u can see
I'mma read it after isha.
So i have to learn Arabic? I wanted to start an open source contribution but don't know where to start from
no not need, if u ask or talk in english they can reply, they know both
actually we have non arabic people
okay!

Which project you have in mind?
google summary code
nice one
Hi I want to know if they're exist some communication channels for gemini-cli for Gsoc 2026 , I couldn't find the one for it
10+ people trying to apply for gemini cli
Hi, does anyone know how to contact and get advice from mentors for wasm-edge?
I joined their slack but have gotten no response, and also joined their discord community but received no response
@somber basalt
follow the contributor guidance on the org's GSoC page. Many orgs have already received dozens and even hundreds of inquiries from contributors who have reached out over the past month and they may not be able to respond to new inquiries at this point.
Anyone opting for PostgreSQL GSoC know how to join their slack channel?
u will find it in their official website
Hi, I did, but I am facing an issue. They require a particular domain email to sign up and join.
i don't think so
press continue with google and use your personal account
I did, and it said what I shared in the first screenshot.
hmmm, i will see if i can invite u to the community
hi
You are a gem, thank you so much 🙌
hello
Heyyy, anybody who was a contributor last year and participating this year as well?
why is the applications button freezed for me?
same issue dude
its a skill issue
I think we have to register before and the registeration might be closed
I am getting this "Return to home page to register it it still open"
It might be closed 🥲
what do you mean ?

Submission opens 18 UTC
Got rejected by one of the projects that I really wanted to work on, also a skill issue lol
Submission open?
yes
23 minutes left
It’s open
open for me too
what projects you thinking of working on @rotund meadow ?
Swift
cool cool
I'm thinking of trying a couple of different orgs, the CERN HSF and CBioPortal orgs look the coolest to me and I have worked on a couple of issues for them so helpfully I'll be considered
gambit looks cool too
Contributor applications are now open!
Read our latest blog Open Source, Open Doors, Apply Now for Google Summer of Code! to get you started 🤓
🗓️ Contributor application period: March 16 - 31
We wish you the best of luck in your application! 🙌
whenever I try to submit a proposal the "Project size" drop down menu doesn't show any options
This is for the cBioPortal org
it is fixed now
still having the same issue is it really fixed on your end
I hit the refresh button next to the "back" on the proposal page
towards the top, don't refresh as normal, just with the mini refresh symbol next to the back button
you can also just submit (the project will default tyo the medium size). then after submitting you can go in and edit it to the size you need. This is a biug for a handful of people so we're trying to figure out the connection as over 100 other folks have had no problem
what does this mean
when I try to register as a contributor I get this
Hello @vestal raptor ,
Now you are registered as Contributor, now go to your profile then contributor then submit your proposal.
Thank You
what? I didn't understand what you said
It means you don't have a GSoC acct. A GSoC account is not the same as a gmail acct.
First, be sure you are not logged in with any Google account in the upper right corner.
Then, you will need to click the "register to become a contributor" button halfway down the homepage and then register.
After you register, go to your dashboard (upper right corner where it says contributor with a green check mark)
Then click on the button to view the 2026 mentoring orgs
go on the organisation list, you will see the button to submit your proposal
One of our applicants cannot fill the proposal application, as he is unable to select the project size (he tried in both Chrome/Firefox with cleared cookies, the issue persists).
Did anyone else encounter that?
yeah i see it now, thanks dude
Should I have a bank account? cuz they require it and currently I don't have
they can just submit (the project will default to the medium size). then after submitting they can go in and edit it to the size they need. This is a bug for a handful of people so we're trying to figure out the connection as over 450 other folks have had no problem
The items showed up this time and submission was successful, thanks @cunning ice 🙏
Hi , for me when i click the contributor button , this shows up ... am i doing something wrong or should I register again with no previous logins ?
No thing wrong
The Project Size dropdown on the proposal submission form shows no options when clicked. I have tried Chrome, Edge, and Brave browsers and the issue persists across all three. I am unable to complete my submission without this field.
You can also just submit (the project will default to the medium size). then after submitting you can go in and edit it to the size you need. Our support team is already working in this issue. 🤓
How does everyone feel about their submission?
It's not about your feel, it's about do u give your max effort or not -- if yes so feel comfortable if not u have 2 weeks to give the best
has anybody been able to join PostgreSQL slack?
omg thxxxx
No problem, u are welcome
You are right. Its best to get rid of doubts and just do your best
GSoC is an individual project- you can't work as teams
Hello
Please go through the pinned messages
thank you lots of love 💟
please I want to understand more about the mentorship and after loggin in, my dashboard isn't displaying, please what can I do?
u can go to your dashboard, go for organizations, select the org, and u can see in the org submit proposal
Hi I would like to ask, is GSoC only for students? if someone already graduated can they still join?
yes for both students and graduates
I have registered for gsoc what's further steps
submit your proposal
Ok so after registration immediately you have to submit a proposal and wait for acceptance ryt?,
not immediately u the proposal submation period is 2 weeks (16 mar to 31 mar)
Ohkay m can u please share any reference proposal if u have I checked out every link but it's not helpful enough
hello someone plese tell me that how can i write better proposal for my org to submut and get assigned the project its very necessary for me
It depends on the org u have chosen
U should choose an org then select a project then write a proposal for this project, in the end u should submit this proposal
Search for previous proposals in the last year's and also some orgs provide a template
hey so guys few quetion i would like to ask you is seeing this msg
FYI: i work with C and know little bit of py and very little C++ ( as of yet! ...)
i am completely oblivious to open source - got to know about gsoc a few days ago did some reserach etc etc and digged up almost all org related to C
and found one project within one org ( its related to Embedded )
Q1) am i late now ( considering i haven gone through their codebase yet - but i fulfill the project req a little bit ) ?
Q2) i am have been working with C and stm-f4 mcu for about 2 months +- ( i didnt do dsa or like Comp prog etc ), so yeah basic - is that really enough considering the amount of skill goes into developing projects...?
Q3) give me some advice on how to write a proposal ( or should i even write one - never contributed to their org or anywhere tbh ) ?

Q2 is not a question
Are they included in the online resource or where do you search for those?
There are websites provide the last years proposals
okay, i'll check for it
why this can anybody tell
Why MIT App inventor is not accepting responses?

❓ Did you register a new profile in the webapp?
Secondly, are you using the same email that you used when registering in the past to log in? Once your email is connected, you can go to the "log in" button, you can go to the Contributor (with a green check mark) in the upper right profile dropdown and you'll see the Mentoring Orgs button. Click on that to find the org you want to submit the proposal to.
Is this normal from an organisation? just curious how organisations respond to students asking doubts about ideas listed by them.
Makes sense to me. I started talking with my mentor in January
Which org is it?
Gambit, this is the first time they're participating in this decade.
What project did you apply to?
You have to be talking to orgs before the actual proposal period starts if you want a decent chance at getting mentored, this is what Google recommend with GSoC - be as early as possible. Of course it's impossible to do that now (unless you travel faster than the speed of light) so you might have to target more "unpopular" orgs if you really want to do something with GSoC but don't apply to an org only for the sake of it; you need to be interested in the topic. I applied to gambit as well at the very beginning and they are cool guys. I actually think it's cool that they told you to not apply because otherwise you would be wasting your time
Also, do any of the orgs appear in this discord?
no orgs are not likely to be this discord
Many people have been reaching out to the orgs and those that wait until this week for their first interactions are highly unlikely to be accepted into the program. We advised the orgs to let the potential contributors know as soon as possible if they were not going to be able to review their questions (due to an overwhelming amount of interest in the previous month+). By them telling you that you don't have a chance at this late date they are helping you not waste your time. The reality is that less than 2% of people that just started reaching out to orgs this week will actually be accepted for 2026. GSoC requires preparation ahead of the registration period.
how often google summer of code happen btw? i know the applies still going but, dont think the join that one
😳
once a year
I registered myself as a GSoC contributor after receiving an email from one of my mentors (after mailing them the evaluation task), who "invited me to submit an application". They further added that they would follow up on the doubt I had asked earlier about the evaluation task. But it's been 48 hours since I last heard from them. Should I start working on my proposal and send them a draft, or will I come across as disobedient for not waiting while they have asked me to wait? The GSoC website recommends submitting the proposal as early as possible.
is there any specific template to submit the proposal?
I didn’t only apply for a project. I proposed a project myself and found a mentor for it. Hopefully I get accepted this year
Yeesh
Wish I knew that before I decided to look into GSOC this week
I know for next year
Hi guys , This is my GSoC proposal.
Its my first time so, any feedback is appreciated ! 🙂
I started on Mar 10th and I have made 4 small PRs relevant to the expected outcome of project.
Any thoughts in increasing my chances of getting selected?
GSoC 2026 Proposal : GFOSS - TIRAuxCloud A Modular AI Pipeline for Thermal Satellite Data with Uncertainty, Explainability, and Unimodal Bias Mitigation Project : Open-Source AI Framework for Thermal Satellite Payload Data Analysis Basic Details : Full Name : Samrat R M Email samratrm2@gmai...
It depends on your org
Some orgs have a template and others not
Hi Anyone facing the issue Submit proposal greyed out even if all mandatory fields are filled out
Got the answer - exceeded proposal summary
Lets vote:
who already applied: ✅
who will still apply: 🔜
I haven't applied yet, I was working on my project for the past few days hoping it would be done before the application period, but now everyone is telling me that I don't have any chances since I didn't connect with the organisation first🤷
What exactly should I do now?
U have the chance to connect with them, and work to make perfect proposal
I will take all the chances I get
Yes, complete to the end
1
Did your mentor gave approval ?
hello, I wanted to ask how do you contact a mentor for contribution
Every org has its communication channel
Make sure u have reached to the org through their information at GSoC website
where will I get that information.
u can see the pinned messages
If you start talking with orgs and mentors now you will have great chances to be accepted next year
and in this year also, no one knows !
With very low chances, yes
maybe but no -- already there are people has been accepted and start late
this not mean that to start early if u has the chance to do that
Stephanie said the chance is less than 2%
Yes correct it is small
What I mean is to start and u must communicate with your org
i am about to apply, I am trying to commit to a repo
Of the project
@rotund meadow is that compulsory?
Hmm are we supposed to try a commit first before the 31st March deadline? Initially, I thought we only had to complete the proposal and get approval to continue working on the proj after the deadline
hello, I know it's extremely late. But is it still possible to apply to the google summer of code? I have a couple ideas and don't know who's still looking for contributors.
i thought so too
Ah. I didn't realize how competitive this would be. I learned about this program too late unfortunately. I'll start to preparing for Summer 2027.
Hi, I am checking on the Google Summer of Code portal to upload proposals for this year. I couldn't see there is a place to upload files. I also tried clear sessions and incognito mode. How can I upload files for this year If I got rejected last year?
HI, Please go to the browse all 2026 organizations and submit thorough the org
Bro dp you know how to register in all these things
@sour wave
How can I register in these google programs can anyone tell me?
Thanks . I see it now.
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/
Check this website and register to become one.
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
How can I register and participate can anyone tell me
Hi, please go through the official website https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/ and register to become a contributer
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more developers into open source software development.
Is it normal for mentors to not respond or be active for weeks??
I have submitted a proposal draft and a few PRs
didn't get any response
a guy has submitted draft on March 1st for same project, no response
try to talk to another one
Anyone interested to contribute Gemini CLI org in GSoC
If I wanted to apply next summer, at what point should I start reaching out to orgs?
You can start from today too, or when you are applying in the next year. Just make sure you're visible to the mentors and making meaningful PR's while applying.
U should start picking up some orgs and start contributing now it self after u make an good amount of prs Then u can reach out a mentor
If you are interested in participating in next year since it is too late to just start reching out now for 2026, then you would want to start reaching out to orgs later this year (around October/November)
🤯 you guys are working since oct
I saw a project on mar 10 and submitted proposal draft in 10 days with 4 small PRs
GSoC is for 4 months and you guys are preparing for 4 months
Thats crazy
u are right but everyone has a chance it's just start from now not wait more
even if u aren't accepted, u will see the world of the open source, learn many skills, and a lot of other things
the dashboard is not coming on
hey, i am tejesh here. i am currently studying about r trees in dbms. but i cannot find a tutorial on youtube completly showcasing insertion, searching algorithm. i am having a tough time understanding this concept. can anybody suggest me a good tutorial, i dont want to read docs i already did and its very tough to understand actually
Hello 👋 everyone, I am new here and also a Startup, I will need your full support.
Any luck?
Hello, I'm new here
getting a 403 error when trying to register
@pale anvil
Thanks!
is there anyone targetiing companies relating to data science and ai
This error is mainly caused because you are trying to log in with a Google acct but you haven't set a GSoC acct, it is not the same. Log out of any Google account you may be signed into (check the upper right corner). Click the "register to become a contributor" button located halfway down the homepage to register for a GSoC account. After you register, go to your dashboard (upper right corner where it says "contributor" with a green checkmark). click the button to view the 2026 mentoring organizations
I'm interested
Hows it going for you guys?
if you are just starting to apply for GSoC 2026 it is loo late to actually get accepted. You needed to start reahing out to orgs at least 3 weeks ago (ideally 7 weeks ago).
This information is not obvious for people. It says that people should contact orgs and so on. However if you look at the timeline, you will see the two weeks spot for submissions and may believe this is the right spot to talk with orgs. Would be great if you write this info in the gsoc guides so people know. Also I have seen a guy being accepted to gsoc last year who never reached out to the org and only directly applied
it is in the contributor guides 'No matter what don't wait until the application period to initiate contact. Engage with multiple communities once the participating organizations are chosen' and in every talk given about GSoC. Like anything you are going to spend months doing there is preparation required.
No org should ever choose someone who has never made contact with them- and after issues orgs had last year it is unlikely any org will select someone they have not had communications with
The guy successfully completed the gsoc. This must be a rare case
Good to know its well written in the guides so noone misses it. I have seen many people applying and initiating talks with mentors just this week. I am not sure if they did not read the guides
Would you say engaging with multiple orgs is better than focusing on one? Why so?
most people don't read the guides : )
that snippet I pulled from the Making First Contact (one of the first chapters of the guide)
If people read the guides they would significantly up their chances of being accepted into the program because they would understand all the moving pieces. Everything can't be written in a FAQ : )
Engaing with a couple of orgs is a good idea. Sometimes the org you are most interested in will be super competitive so you want to also find a good second choice to balance your odds
I just read in the FAQs chances are increased if you talk with orgs early 👍
and we even shortened the FAQ ro make it shorter and easier for folks to sort through
yep
that's to open source projects outside of the GSoC program.
but a key problem this year is people think that by submitting dozens of PRs they are going to help their chances in GSoC, but that's not true. It's actually overwhelming the mentors and causing a lot of problems.
people should read the organization's contributor guidelines and follow their instructions. which usually entail reaching out to the org first befire doing a random PR
many people just open PRs, but they are not merged. I think its only valuable if the PR gets merged
after uploading my proposal in this page should i wait for accseptanse or rejection or any step after it ?
those just submitting a lot of PRs and not having good communication with the org are likely to be ignored
and it needs to be a valid PR for the org
did you receive the email saying your proposal was submitted? If so then you will need to wait until after April 30 1800 UTC to find out if you were accepted. Hopefully you have already been communicating with the org
Gsoc is really about building up a relationship with mentors of the org and constantly talk with them. I think this is not only valid for gsoc, but life itself. Always important to have good relationships with the people around you
Some people think GSoC is about writing code for a project as fast as you can and then submititng it. It is definitely not and we encourage orgs to fail people doing this. GSoC is about the mentorship and being integrated into the community, that is just as important if not more important than the actual code created during the program.
It is a great way to get into a community as mentors allocate time for you. My goal is to really grow into this community while also getting things done
that's the right attitude : )
please don't put personal details on this list. email us at gsoc-support@google.com
sorry, thanks
Can anyone guide me how to apply to this?
Please check the channel pins for resources
Is there any minimum requirements for this ?
It is a bit late to apply as the application window closes on March 31 at 18:00 UTC
We always recommend to start communications with Orgs ~February so you can have time to contribute, communicate and receive feedback for your proposal before applications are closed. Right now Orgs are very busy reviewing the applications and it's very complicated to get back to all the late applicants.
You cab review our official website g.co/gsoc and timeline for more details about GSoC.
if i already submit my proposal and i want to edit it now do you recommend it or it is better do not?
U can edit from the website dashboard
i know but i ask it is late or not to do it ?
I think while we are before the deadline u can edit
You can still improve it and re upload the newest version before the final deadline
I have made a project proposal yesterday , will i able to edit that?
So everyone submitted???
for now yes but it will close today, make sure to submit it fastly
Do applications close in 1 hour?
Yeah i have made a submission
applications close in less than 27 minutes
i was unable to submit
cant i just submit now
i didnt know about the checklist
because of that i couldnt submit
i found out about it now
deadline already passed, there are no extensions. We suggest getting involved earlier next year
Any tips so I can improve the chances of my Blender proposal being accepted?
too late now : )
I've already submitted my proposal, but the GSoC team is obviously going to be checking my GitHub profile so I'm asking for tips to look impressive.
the mentoring org you applied to is the one making decisions, not Google
The form said that the organization would ask us questions is that normally through email or through like the discord or slack
each org is different. usually that would have already happened by now.
Being a good candidate is not enough. It is also about priorities of the GSoC projects as each org only gets a limited amount of slots
A co-worker is trying to go through the process of signing up as a mentor on GSoC. However when he logs in, he's told that he needs to switch his profile, but he only sees one profile.
he needs to be invited by an org admin from this year's program to be able to accept the 2026 terms
He was invited
he should reach out to gsoc-support@google.com
okay. thanks
Greetings
I'm Richard from CSUMB
any of you guys security focused?
and have experience with fighting games
specifically rollback netcode?
I think u can ask here #general , this channeld is for gsoc
in this while what should we do before the result of gsoc ?
continue communication with your org and mentors
& contributions
Is there any information how many people applied etc?
What the beneficial of this information?
Numbers, its all about numbers!
What the benefits also😅
weird question, would you recommend just cold introducing yourself to your org then?
like the orgs you submitted proposals to?
@subtle vine
I submitted my proposals during the last week of submissions cause the previous weeks I was busy with my day job (QC/QA for CNC Manufacturing) and midterms (My own classes and the classes I'm a TA for)
no, please do not cold introduce yourself to the orgs at this point. It's too late. That should have been done weeks ago (in February ideally).
The orgs are overwhelmed reviewing proposals right now. One org received 851 proposals...
noted
apparently someone yesterday had a similar question, and one of the orgs I was interested, OWASP, responded
sorry for the inconvenience
If I want to prepare for gsoc 2027 what should be my aim or focus ? Any tip ? anything would be helpful 😭
As Stephanie said, it's toooo late and they are busy with the proposals
no i got that
thanks for the reply
No what?
its nothing, its a turn of phrase, sorry if that caused any confusion
thank you for the information
Ok, no problem
U are welcome
Do we know how many slots each org gets?
Last year there were like 10 projects and only 4 projects were selected
after accepetence u can know
yup
Your answers mostly dont help
cuz these information no one knows them ; )
This year was rough with AI applications where people just copy pasted bad output from AI
I mistakenly submitted my GSoC proposal to GFOSS instead of UC OSPO
is there anything can be done now please?
I have also sent mail to gsoc-support@google.com regarding this issue. Also have notified UC OSPO team regarding this
is there a way to change the name of my proposal? a mentor has suggested changing the name and including the project name in the proposal but i can’t find a way to edit it
I just have a repo with my proposal and make a PR with post GSoC submission modifications
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I also applied for Google Summer Of Code'26 as a contributor.
I would like to be fully transparent, technically I'm from a commerce and IT background bridging both fields, where as I'm a risk advisory auditor following Chartered Accountancy where I approach threat modeling, compliance gap analysis and control frameworks from a professional finance background, not just a theoretical one. Moving to my IT side I'm currently at a foundational stage with Java, web concepts, Cybersecurity, git and REST API, python, SQL, snowflake. I'm fully committed to putting in the hours to grow technically throughout collaborating with everyone here.
I'd really appreciate any guidance on whether my finance -focused approach aligns with what you're looking for in any project anyone needs help with, please send me a GM, thanks!
Unfortunately, proposals cannot be updated at this point.
@thin vigil Feel free to ask your questions about gsoc here and take a read through the chat to see what others are discussing! 🙂
@swift charm I am new at open source can you please guide me how to complete project for any organisation
See pinned messages
Contributor applications period closed on March 31 at 1800 UTC
Please visit our official GSoC website and review our blog entries: Google Open Source Blog, we also have a Help section where you can find the program timeline and the most important resources.
🚀
We hope you can apply in future editions! 🙂
Does GSOC allow students who major on mathematics and Statistics?
Participants should be able to code in the programming language used by the organization and the project idea that they are applying to (C++, Go, Python, JavaScript, etc.) . Participants are not expected to be expert coders, however they need basic knowledge (~2yoe) of the programming language to be able to code during the summer.
Ok, then I'll try registering for next cohort
Thanks for the response 😊
i'm preparing for gsoc 2027
I'm preparing for GSOC 2027 too but, I am a bit lost and don't know how to start in my current state. Should I start practicing a language and start contributing in an org, or wait and learn other programming language well before contributing?
I tried filling in the ranking order of GSoC projects in the GSoC dashboard, but it seems like there's some issue with the webpage. It says "Something went wrong", and there's an error in the JS console:
Submission closed last month
Sorry, should have clarified, I'm an org admin and have issues with the dashboard when selecting GSoC projects to be sent to Google.
FWIW, it works from the "Select to Rank" tab (but not from the "Inbox" tab), if anyone else runs into it
Excited to know how many slots each org gets!
Where do yall getting Mentors?
By talking with people about technical topics
I get to know the people, what they work on, make my contributions to it
Is there no specific community for GSoC Mentors? Or I just have to enter the Org discord server?
this from the official website
https://google.github.io/gsocguides/mentor/selecting-students-and-mentors#slot-count
The organization says it wants 7 slots and google decides it gets 5 slots, means the extra 2 are not accepted
yup
So you basically need to survive the ranking for the project(between others who applied for the same project) and then the ranking of the projects in your organization
Can anyone help?
Hey, to my knowledge there isn't a specific community for that, correct.
I see 💔
no each org has its communication channel
Aih ✨
Exactly
anyone contributing to CNCF projects?
it is better to reach their communication channels
How is everyone getting on with their orgs? I had a casual interview with cbioportal for making MCP apps and was wondering if anyone else is working with that org
I am not working under that org but, found a mentor yet?
Yea I found a mentor and we had a casual chat, it's not gonna be confirmed whether or not I get it but its looking pretty good for me
so you reached out to their org discord and found a mentor there?
Whats the process for mentors to sign up for GSoC, is there any?
I basically just created a proposal and done some prs and then they wanted a chat
And then someone reached out
Its somewhat different for me. I came up with the project myself, the mentor agreed it is about time to work on this topic. The project was accepted by the organization. Now I am applying for the project. During this time I talked with the mentor and did some really small PRs. They never reached out to me, but I talked with them
Alr
Do the orgs know by now how many slots they will get?
I think they do
2026 Contributors will be officially announced on April 30th at 1800 UTC 🤓
I cannot wait😱
Excited to see who made it in my targeted org
is someone from here contributing in nrnb?
hello maam, do u know anything about nrnb?
Cool I’ll be waiting
Lets not wait, rather create PRs and contribute now
The 2026 organizations are currently reviewing all the proposals and ranking them, after that the official announcement will be on April 30th. If Orgs are not responding now is normal, they are really busy right now 😉

Any tips for preparation if I'm aiming for gsoc 2027 ?
make PRs in your targeted org and network with the community within the org
And any tips for making pr ?
Not by me, just do it
Okie thanks for the info though ❤️
7 days left!
yes lets go
6 days left!
I’m planning to visit California from May 3rd to 9th. It would be great if we could arrange a meetup with the GSoC team and have a get-together during that time.
How so? This is online and people are around the world, not only in California
5 days left!
4 days left!
3 days left now and I am pretty excited. Really do hope I get chosen for my project, I've made a good few PRs. So excited to see what the outcome will be
Hii guys my name is Adarsh and I just started learning about open source and about to make my first contribution, can anyone of you help to guide for these program for this year or upcomming years i'll be very gratteful if anyone can assist me
find something that you would really like to work on first
a lot of the open source code that is out there can do with a lot of improvements so I' sure you will find something to fix. Just make sure that is a project that you are really invested in, look at issues and prs on the project and get networking. Before you reach out to anyone, make sure you have a fix/suggestion that you are willing to implement, or have already implemented because this will immdiately get a response.
My suggestion is to not find something to fix, but rather look in known issues and solve one there. It is way easier and more accepted to solve known issues
3 Days left!
1 day left i suppose ?
2 days 23 hours 34 minutes
~58 hours left
this is true, coming up with something unique to contribute to the codebase is probably something you would only do if you are really familiar with the software. But I do believe that if you go into the code with the mindset of trying to find something to fix then you will understand the code very thoroughly and you be able to contribute to issues anyway. Usually getting ahead in GSoC just requries being really proactive and being interested in what the orgs are really doing, and of course you should also come across as very friendly and approachable with every intereaction.
Fixing issues can be "low hanging fruit" I suppose too, there is nothing wrong with it but for really making a good impression then I'd recommend just reading the code to find some bugs you can fix yourself. Every orgs works differently of too of course
Also, this is probably not the right place to ask, but does google have something like a "Google Quantum Comminity" similar to the developer community? Something that encourages developers or scientist to work in quantum computing with Google?
With a colleague I have been trying to upstream a feature for more than a year
What were you working on?
A huge project. Just wanted to tell you its easier to fix known issues
This is true
Approximately 51 hours from now
Hi guys, I am new to GSOC. Is GSOC program already started or I am late?
2 days 22 minutes left
I so cannot wait any longer
1 day 12 hours
you will have to wait until next year, the orgs have already put in their submissions for contributors. Don't be discouraged however, this gives you a lot of time to prepare for next year
Around 28 hours
is anyone checking the reddit?
reddit of gsoc2025
like what is this json thing?
Seems to be outdated if its about gsoc 2025
I took a look at the program thing on the reddit and I really don't know what its about. I have one of my proposals still there in program property
I would honestly not worry too much about it until the actual results come out
When will they announce the results?
1 day 1 hour and 47 minutes
