Best practice

Submit your proposal at least 24 hours before the deadline to assure your proposal is submitted for review.

Please keep these tips in mind:

If you are trying to reach out to one of the 185 mentoring organizations now, understand that at this late point in the application period many of the orgs (and mentors) will not have time to respond to you.
Do not wait to get feedback from a mentor to submit your proposal. If the mentor does respond before the submission deadline you can always go in and upload a newer version of your proposal until the April 8 1800 UTC deadline. You can re-submit your proposal with edits as many times as you want until the April 8 1800 UTC deadline.

any medium or large project could be extended if the mentor and org admin allow it. Some orgs only want projects to be 12 weeks, others no more than 18 weeks. it depends on your mentor. Remember you don't get paid more for extending the project, it just spread your coding period over more weeks

Hi, I have a question regarding the stipend.
I submitted a proposal for a large project, and if I get accepted and complete the program until the final evaluation, I understand that I would receive the large project stipend.

However, I have a scholarship with an income cap. If I receive the full stipend for a large project, my total income (GSoC stipend + scholarship) may exceed that cap. As a result, my scholarship might be reduced or even suspended, which would decrease the total amount of money I can actually receive.

Is it possible to request a smaller stipend (for example, equivalent to a medium or small project), even if I complete a large project?

You need to request the Org Admins invite you to be a GSoC 2025 mentor.

If you were a mentor in a previous GSoC then you already have a GSoC account so you just need to go to your dashboard and find the 2025 terms and agree to them

if you haven't been reaching out to the orgs and working on your proposal for the last few weeks it is basically too late to get accepted into GSOC 2025 as it takes days to write a good proposal and have conversations with the orgs, you've waited too long for 2025. We suggest you try again next year. There are no more meetings planned to discuss GSoC 2025. We start holding inormation sessions usually in December or January for interested contributors.

@cunning ice Yeah, exactly. And honestly, who can create a new proposal in 30 minutes? Students have put in a lot of effort, and facing this kind of issue at the last moment is really disheartening. The error wasn’t even verbose enough to help us fix our PDFs. I understand we were submitting close to the deadline, but if we had known about any PDF restrictions beforehand, we would’ve addressed them in time. As far as I know, no specific PDF guidelines were mentioned, and my file was well under 500 KB, so it shouldn’t have been a size issue either.

We do not extend deadlines. There was nothing wrong with the site- hundreds of people submitted their proposals successfully in the final hour.

Yes, it's that the program is reputed. Additionally, you get mentored so you someone to guide you. The stipend is also helpful, so you don't have to worry about income while you contribute.

I'd say if you want to join GSoC next year, contribute to some beginner-friendly open source a bit during this year. Get familiar so you can apply to a field that interests you next year.

I was going to apply this year but I found that being complete beginner is extremely hard. I didn't apply, I intend to do some small works during free time this year and apply next year.

I need help in choosing the right organisation for Google Summer of Code 2026.

Hello all, I'm an undergraduate student, currently in my second semester, studying Computer Science in South-East Asia. I aspire to participate in and complete a large-scale project in an organisation related to full-stack web development or Artificial Intelligence. I have chosen these fields because I wish to become a full-stack AI developer. Currently, I know little about AI but I am doing the Odin Project course to learn the MERN stack for web development.

Besides my chosen fields (AI and web dev systems), I would like the organisations to be well-known because, given my lack of other experiences and young age (19M), I have to make up for it by taking the maximum benefit out of every opportunity.

I really wanted to work in Tensorflow but online research led me to believe that people prefer PyTorch now. I was also interested in Chromium but I have heard of some shady protocols/features being added, such as disregard of users' privacy and a monopoly in the browser market.

I believe Apache might be out of my reach, but I have 9-10 months to learn and start contributing. So I am up for a challenge. Can you guide me through this process of choosing an organisation? Thank you.

Is it possible that two orgs selects the same contributor and then the contributor is asked to whom they want to work? Or this year it won't happen as ranking of proposals was done by the contributor.

I guess the latter option is the correct one. It doesn't make sense to ask such contributor about his/her preferences since he/she already specified them.

If in the rare case 2 orgs accept your proposal (usually only happens to about 10-12 people a year), then the org that ranks your proposal the highest will be the org you will be spending GSoC 2025 with.

If the contributor ranked their proposals then that Will be considered but doesn't necessarily mean they will get their #1 choice. The org that ranked you highest gets the ultimate decision.

It's mentioned that if contributors do not have a Payoneer account by June then they won't receive payment, so I guess the same logic means there's still time to let Google know that you'd like to decline payment? Manually ticking the box then saving just throws errors.

Hello! I submitted two proposals for GSoC 2025 — one intended for the extended timeline (June to November) and the other for the regular timeline (June to September).

When I filled out the applications, I thought the “project size” field referred to the complexity or scope of the project. Based on that, I marked one as medium and the other as large, following the difficulty level described on the org pages.

But I recently realized that “project size” might actually refer to the expected duration instead. If that’s true, then I accidentally swapped them — the one written for the extended period should’ve been marked large, and the one for the regular period should’ve been medium.

Could someone clarify if I misunderstood the meaning of project size? And if so, is it still possible to update it?

Hi,
I have quick questions about the GSoC process and would appreciate any insights:

1. For one of my proposals, I had an interview with one organization and they said just wait. Google should select, and no feedback yet. However, for other proposals (like those under DeepMind/JAX/Keras), there hasn’t been any communication, and we’re not allowed to contact mentors directly. Do these organizations conduct interviews, or do they evaluate proposals internally without interviews? I’d love to understand how selection works in those cases.

2. I originally mentioned 35 hours/week availability in my proposals but realized I can fully commit full-time. Is there a way to update that information across all proposals before the final selection?

3. Lastly, as someone with prior industry experience who’s passionate about contributing to open source, I was wondering when GSoC typically requests additional information regarding eligibility. I’d be happy to provide any supporting details if needed.

We would like to clarify some of the questions that you are posting here.

1. GSoC admins are not selecting contributors. Each Organization has its own process to review applications and select the right fit for the project; they can make sure of your knowledge/skills by interviewing contributors, requesting contributions, code reviews, etc. Each Org has a Contributor Guidance at the bottom of their page and contact methods if that's the case. You should be following their instructions to comply with their process.
2. During the Community Bonding period the selected Contributors can review the project scope with their Mentors and request extensions if they consider that the project needs more time to comply with the primary objectives (not new ones). Once a project has been defined there cannot be changes.
3. We do not request additional information, if you filled out the application form correctly that works for us. We are not evaluating the potential contributors.

Yes, the results by now have been finalized, already the mentors got notified about the contributors that got accepted (they get notified around 2 days before the contributors get notified), but the "contributor" thing on the profile isn't the official way to announce the results, it might not mean anything, or it might be a bug and mean something, either way, I would suggest chilling and waiting for the official results tomorrow, don't ask your mentor about them since I believe they are instructed not to mention anything until the results are officially released, and it doesn't make sense to do that since if we wait just 1 more day, we will know for sure.

Lastly, don't get disappointed if you don't get accepted, if you did a great job preparing for GSoC I am sure your org appreciates that and you can discuss with them working on the project away from GSoC, maybe they can sign a contract with you, and I am sure you learnt a lot of useful things along the journey of applying, and either way there are a ton of things that you can do to make use of your time, get a lot of valuable experience, and have fun.

so the ranking system of contributors is used as a tiebreaker

and you get lost in the noise

That's clearly something with how you have your Gmail account set up. I can't help you with that but read my email where I tell you which emails to make sure you mark as safe and then hopefully you'll get the rest of the emails moving forward
