For pixel art Aseprite is an amazing program and its on steam. It has really useful functions but is also simple enough for anyone to use. It is made specifically for pixel art You can also animate with it

Oh btw while not the best art tool, I rock gimp which is more made for photoshop but has layers and a few other goodies. It just works well for me since I'm use to it

If youre used to the ms paint / paint 3d interface, paint.net is a great free tool for raster/pixelart

Its not meant to be the most advanced program but easy to learn and can be acquired free from their website (getpaint dot net)

Its essentially MS paint but more comfortable to navigate with shortcuts, layer function, ability to open multiple files at once, and like 100x the options

Its gonna sound weird but i personally like using it

Aseprite is a great option if youre looking specifically for pixelart, as it is based around that style and will have even more tools to help but without a stable income i didnt have the heart to get it without paying, as that one is paid
Even though its not expensive but i just got used to paint.net

Oh it's pretty nice. I only have a mouse/keyboard so it works out great for that. But I imagine if you have an actual drawing tablet or just want to use a normal art software there are better options.

I just like it since I've used it for so long and are use to the layout. Plus it lets me photoshop images aswell. Other than that some of the photoshop tools can come in handy while drawining but idk if they're on other actual art softwares

Not an Embark employee here but the magic is behind region maps and shading. Each mesh (at least for the characters cuz thats what i was interested in) has a 256x256 or so texture representing "regions" of this mesh - lets say silk, cotton, metal etc etc. Since a texture can contain Alpha, R+G+B, it gets really deep here. Each region on this texture may be a combination of any of these channels (so you get yellow, cyan and pink for example), can also be black and white (so you have hue info, saturation info and value info) This way, a 256x256 texture can contain A LOT of mesh info that can be used in shading stage. In shading stage, you "basically" separate each region obtaining the b/w mask of each one from this texture by using some color math and combine it with what you want. So lets say, region X should be silk -> you take the region X mask you obtained from region map, and combine it with silk pbr maps, repeating the process for other regions. A very smart system, indeed.

unfortunately I'm unable to share images cuz of low rank but currently I'm trying to re-create something like what the finals uses. as far as my understanding goes, they use 2 UV's for the textures, UV1 stores the general mesh info such as HP normal bake curvature, thickness, occlusion, and the uv2 is maybe split up so that the places where there's extra detail in meshes (for instance gun manufacturing number engraving) have as much UV space as possible so that you can bake the highest amount of pixels per UV shell? this baked UV2 information is then added over the UV1 in a shader for the best result. and with all the occlusion, thickness and curvature info one could really go to town with procedural texturing with re-useble seemless textures in-engine given you develop a shader that supports this workflow

If you look closely on guns sometimes there are little details like engravings. on the sniper for instance if you go to the ribbon contamination in noticed that they had a text engraving somewhere on the barrel/upper receiver which looked really high quality (in other words just not pixelated) too high quality to be in a bake that is lower then 4k in resolution. albeit, maybe im overthinking it and they just use the built in unreal engine Decal system lol

Rechecked, embark uses Albedo map (its mostly black everywhere tho so im in questions where is it used), RGB ID map, Normal map and Occlusion+Curvature+Material ID map where material id tells the material type such as silk cotton or metal for additional rendering treatment

Yeah on most meshes what i wanted to look at it was pure black (but they are still different size meaning they are still used in some way, so i kinda have no idea about it), on these where it wasnt it was b/w so i guess in this case its just being multiplied on colors they've set through id map
