i think 3 works, there just needs to be more of a difference between the 2nd and third, either brightening up third or my preference would be to make the middle slightly darker to make third pop a bit better

I've used blender for a long time now, I definitely recommend it to anyone who's really interested in the idea. It starts off slow, but you just need a few project ideas that you can resonate with. The hardest part about 3D is realizing that you probably don't know what kind of objects are actually more complicated than others until you try to make them yourself.

Oh I see. There are many different ways you can make hair in blender, and I'd say eevee helps quite a bit with previewing just about anything while you're making it.

I recommend focusing on learning shortcut keys for most things. I personally like the UI a lot, but I also don't find myself playing around with it much vs just making things directly in the viewport. Only exception being stuff like shaders, geometry nodes, UV packing, etc

They have an improved base system for automatic packing, which is pretty nice. I think it was introduced sometime around v3.6. Basically takes into account the actual shape of the UV islands instead of treating them all as box volumes, which makes for much more tight and consistent packing with very minimal effort. Aside from automatic packing being improved, I'd say it's mostly the same, straight forward experience. There are plenty of interesting addons out there too, but I personally don't use many of those for UVs. Only one I use is one that automatically straightens out curved UVs along each axis.

i like to use RizomUV for unwraps, it's best algorythm for unwraps/packing that i've found yet.

Just go do some comprehensive beginners tutorial, like the infamous blender guru donut. While I'm sure you won't care about it, it will teach you what is and isn't possible. If you don't know what blender can do, you won't know how best to use it. So just learn what it's capable of, is a good place to start

@upper olive if you're interested, these are some of my old works I did back in between 2020-2022 (tried placing them chronologically from newest to oldest from top to bottom), that donut render was the first thing I ever did and is dated october 1st 2020, the sunset render however was the last thing I did (or rather finished, because i have some slightly fresher WIPs) before the break, I made it back in may 2nd 2022, ever since then I never touched Blender until I made Momo, so it was way over a year.
You can also kinda see how my style is kinda all over the place lol, thats because I never actually knew what style I wanna stick to, but now I'm pretty sure that "low poly with outlines" style as seen in my recent works is something i wanna do, it just feels good to make this, even though this outline is pain in the ass to set up.

Also fun fact - FNAF Office render is to this day my biggest and longest projects I ever did, it took me at least 3 days 4-5h each to finish, because I had so many issues + I kept learning in the meantime. But I'm damn proud of this one in particular.

If anyone else is looking for doodling ideas lmao, the other was a Cashout Mimic. These were really bad idea drawings I passed over to Nate lmao, but the idea is that the Cashout might be a mimic with a little dude thing inside it.

It would either have it's little arms hang out from the opened side or it would have them come out of the two openings on it's side if that makes sense.

I'm no illustrator so I don't have experience personally drawing it, but I can tell you from a materials standpoint it's easiest to get convincing results when you think about the properties of gold being a metal. Don't hesitated to shade with really stark contrasting colors on it. Smooth gold often has nearly pure-black areas on the undersides or anywhere mostly hidden from light, even in situations with a lot of bright lights around it.

Yeah, you can also make highlights way more saturated than you might do with dielectric (non-metal) materials. Metals have special properties where they actually diffuse light inside the surface of the material and diffuse it back out, so it tints the light to have a similar color to the metal when it reflects off. Plastics and such don't do that, which is one of the reasons you can often tell the difference by eye, even if you don't necessarily know why you see a difference.

Yeah the same principle applies with stylized stuff, just with more or less emphasis on different aspects (generally speaking). That's a great example of good shading on metal. It doesn't showcase much in terms of color because it's a grey metal, but the principles are all there still.
