Yes its playable, but one would expected the game being released already, at least the single player part. The game is in development since 2010, the first playable version was out in 2016 (The Arena thingy) and with that come the buy options of the ships. The single player part was planned to release at 2020, then they scratched that, and now all we have a couple of planets moons and asteroids, with a lot of activities, which looks cool, but the game is in developement since 13 years, and even Cyberpunk did not take that long. (However hen it was released, it was not perfect conditions, and it had a lot of content cut. )

Star Citizen is a grandiose project, but i can see why people have doubts with it.

"To make available to the public" it also does not do. If you pay for access, you are not part of the public anymore. You become a playtester.
