if you ever get a chance to read the light novels i reccomend it cause his character is very much more explained there. how i understand his character is when he beginins sao he is anti-social and struggles to have relatinships with people. part of the reason he pushes klein away and never even develops feelings for asuna until just before he reveals his duel wielding skill. the first time he opens up and trys to have a relatioship with someone is sachi. during this time tho he was still selfish and cared only about making sure he was the most powerful player (he had a huge fear of being left behind in power). for this reason he lost sachi. from this point on kirito is deathly afraid of losing another friend. this is why and only why he is able to do such feats like 1v1 gleam eyes the floor boss after it wastes the liberation army raid team. this power he gets tho from his fear of losing someone has a drawback and a cost. he only can fight at 110% when his friends are in danger. if his friends arent in extreme danger, he cant fight the same. and when his friends are in danger and he does dial it up to 11, he is put into a glass cannon state. he is at his best fighting form, but if he fails he cant live with himself. this form is first seen after sachi and most notably during war of the underworld where he was comotose for half the season. in a nutshell lol, thats one of the ways sao gets a little deep. but i get it you rpefer other stories i totally respect it
