There is a lot going around its story in the use of power against power and the fact that Ashe was steadfast in using a power that could level an entire region and I like that Vayne has his own ongoing struggles against the political upheaval of Archadia. When you factor in the empire, the resistance, the party and the various races living in Ivalice, there is a lot going on, especially when the party spends a long time arguing about the best way to act against Vayne that would not endanger the people of Ivalice even if their refusal to use power means they are upholding the status quo of Ivalice against their will. Not to mention the entire free will vs determinism plot that the two factions faces against the gods.

That's why I'm saying that a lot that I appreciate in FFXII is something I find in FFXIV, so I don't think it is surface level in this regard. It offers a good mix of character moments (the way everyone is chained to their past, even Vayne himself), and the way they all have to consider the political environment they live in. That's my take on it anyway
