Well, my endpoint being that the idea of Death Flags is valid and a real writing technique that has in more recent times been used for fake out deaths but is still a very valid trope.
Killing off a main character isn't something you always want to do, but killing off a rando wont leave the audience with any feelings.
So you need to build up a side character INTO a main character before killing them.

Hence the idea of the death flag. A character who wasn't really center screen suddenly having a spotlight placed on them is a red flag.

Visual novel trash concept, imo. Because going by how our entire cast acquires death flags apparently, all of the scions should have died, reincarnated, and died again six times over.

Death happens, but it seems of late that every character arc is suggested to need to end with death as a punctuation. Win an important fight? Gotta die. Come to a momentous decision? Gotta die. Just stand around with your ears twitching? Gotta die.

Its grim and miserable. Then when they don't die, because this game doesn't use death flags as a writing technique because it isn't a garbage visual novel, people whine. Thancred was in peril but prevailed. He shoulda died what a fakeout plot armor reeee.

Its a whole lot of nonsense and it doesn't reflect what the game actually does in 99% of situations. Ultimately it doesn't hurt anyone to speculate, but people get too invested in their morbid theories and then get mad when it plays out differently.

Runs like a dream now.

Automata doesn't require ANY prior knowledge. It takes place about 7000-8000 years after RepliCant.
If you DO happen to have D1/NieR knowledge going into Automata then a lot of things will give you "OH SHIT, I remember that" moments.

But you dont lose anything by not playing them first.
