You don't. Nothing about Automata's plot aside from the background lore, requires you to play another game. Do machine lifeforms show up in NieR? No. Does the Logic Virus show up in NieR? No. Do any of the characters aside from Devola and Popola (and Emil but he gets a pass) show up in NieR? No. Even Devola and Popola aren't even the same characters, the only thing you need to know is that they did something bad in the past, but even in-universe, no one knows what it was, because it isn't relevant to the game's story. We don't need to know about Gestalts, Replicants, the Shadowlord. Automata is fine standalone, and if you want a deeper dive into the universe you can play the original NieR. But saying that Automa doesn't make sense, or you can't understand it without the other games is blatantly untrue.

The biggest references to NieR are in that one room with the datalogs on stuff that happened pre-Automata, but even then it's just going into detail on how humanity went extinct, and is at most a reference for the fans.
