Current hypothesis is that Ascians, Champions of Hydaelyn, Zodiark, Hydaelyn, Minfillia, all got played by whatever's the FInal Days thing is up to. Hydaelyn mentions Zodiark and her were once united--doesn't match what Emet said. Hydaelyn lied?

No. Hydaelyn has a measure of the truth, ascians were lied to. Not by Zodiark--but by Telephoroi.

They summon Zodiark--ruining the actual combined will of the star--and Hydaelyn is summoend to balance, but the fact is--this is actualyl 'part of the plan' and the Tele wait and bide their time. Hydaelyn splits Zodiark, now it's time to whittle Hydaelyn down.

So they slowly 'rejoin' making Hydaelyn weaker and weaker until she no longer functions.

And with both gods out of the way--the world destroys itself.
