when you're using a glamour prism on an individual item, is that prism just gone afterwards?

compared to using the glamour plates where you use a prism once and can then use those glamours on all your gear?

A prism is used up when you manually glamour an item, yes

you also use the prism up when putting an item into the dresser

generally plates are more cost efficient since there's no prism required to use them

but they have the caveat of only being apply-able in safe zones like major cities, housing districts and end game hubs

'What is Glamour and how do I unlock it?'

Glamour is the process of changing an equipment's look into a different item with the use of Glamour Prisms. You can unlock the ability to glamour by doing the level 15 quests 'If I Had a Glamour' in Vesper Bay, West Thanalan. Although not required, you can unlock the ability to dye gear with the nearby quest 'Color Your World'. You can get the Orange Juice needed by talking to the nearby Merchant & Mender. Items used for glamouring are not lost upon use.

'How do I glamour? Where do I get more Prisms?'

Glamouring is done by right-clicking (Square or X on controllers) on the equipment you want to glamour and choosing the option 'Cast Glamour'. After clicking this you choose the item you want the appearance on the right half of the menu that opened up. You can get more Glamour Prisms by either crafting them after completing the quest 'Absolutely Glamourous', buying them from your Grand Company Quartermaster, or buying them from the marketboard.

This is nice. But I think I misspoke earlier - I want something that's more "dress uniform", like in the military, than an actual dress. Neo-ishgardian aside. This looks nice, though. I'm also liking the look of the Alliance Coat of Fending

Did you check out the skallic fending set? Pretty similar style to the alliance one but it's more of a coat style, doesn't wrap around the front
