Fwiw, every ff game with speed up added works like this for some reason, ff8 ultima weapon is infamous for how you originally needed 2 parties but now nah you can just run across ultimecias entire castle in time (and Odin timer lmao)

Ff12 it’s a little less pronounced bc it only effects overworld timers and not battles, so timers like Zeromus works as intended but chocobo timers and Giza plains wet dry seasons aren’t effected by it’s 4 times speed

The reason each of those work is bc the game was originally programmed to put a timestamp in IGT for whatever time ahead on your time played counter and not start an actual timer, which makes sense for accounting for lag in zone transitions and combat loading but yeah, creates this issue

You can also hard crash your console by starting a timer right before the games IGT passes back to 0:00 and causing a severe overflow glitch in ff9 specifically (infamously done to get excal 2 if you don’t want to speedrun the game, minus the crashing bit)

It basically says “this timer started at 10:05.00 IGT, it is 15m timer, it ends at 10:20.00” and simply counts how far away that is. If you use a cheat engine to change your IGT in an emulator or pc port it also changes the timer because of this
