What do all these quest icons mean?

- These are how you reach the endgame and every other bit of content is locked behind it to some extent. MANDATORY
- These unlock a feature, instanced content, job actions, or a thing that is important for you to have. Do the ones related to your job/class and ones that unlock new content
- These usually have very little exp/gil as reward and are usually just part of the world/lore expansion. Mostly optional unless you are interested in doing them for the fluff
- These are quests you can do more than once, how often you can repeat it is up to the individual quest.

Well in technicality it's not "turning off Numlock" or at least shouldn't.
It's making Windows OS overwrite the numlock function and using the secondary inputs (arrowkeys home end etc) on the number pad.

You can't just run off and explore every avenue of the world.
It is structured to be a Japanese styled RPG game which are typically linear in nature.

Your typical MMO stuff is available at end game.

But in FFXIV there is a lot to do so what is considered "end game" is really up to you.

If you wanna be a raider, raids exist at level cap.
If you wanna be a hardcore raider, those also exist.
If you wanna RP, be social, or just explore the world, those all exist too.

From side-quests, gold saucer, PvE end game, PvP, Social aspects, Housing, Glamour, and etc, the game has a lot of things to do.

The only issue is you must do the MSQ to unlock the majority of it.

In terms of Solo-ability, you can do Duty Support to use NPCs to do dungeons (and I think Squadron missions from the Grand Company for some dungeons)
8 person and above content you'll need to do with real people.

The AI is kind of hit or miss though, keep in mind.

Skipping ARR: People do it, I don't suggest it. The story ties in elements of ARR all the way to current story. It's pretty much the foundation of the stories core. But if you're at the point of quitting the game because of the ARR story, you can consider skipping it, just know you're missing a lot of context and won't understand or get a lot of things in the story.

Something to keep in mind with FFXIV, as someone said earlier, it's a JRPG first and MMO second. The story is the main part of this game and it's all about the journey to the end of the game and not going right into the "end game". It's a complete 180 from what you're probably used to from World of Warcraft.

You'd also need to buy a job-boost to get your character to the proper level to continue into Heavensward so that's even more money wasted. (iirc)

Healing: It's intimidating at first but you get used to it. As Lynn said you are actually just a DPS job with mostly healing spells. Your main focus is to DPS and make sure the tank and DPS don't die.

Bard (aka Archer) is a good starting class, it is a little slow like the other jobs but it builds on itself as you level and gets better and faster as you go.
