so those levels are a great time to check your poetics vendor

Yep. That phrase is important if you do make one yourself because then you won't get people expecting you to know everything, and will instead get people who either also don't know the fight; OR someone who doesn't mind helping someone learn and doesn't mind the wiping that naturally happens.

submarine parts are less straightforward than airships. besides the starting set, each submarine set has a stat they're good/bad at, and also varies based on the part of the set.

to be brutally honest, if you can spare the gil I'd recommend just buying them off the marketboard. Depending on the crafts you do you can use up a ton of shards very easily.
Besides the marketboard, you can use housing gardens and gardenpots to grow Levinlight seeds with Grade 3 Shroud Topsoil for 100 shards every 18 hours.
If you use Ishgard Restoration for leveling, you can spend the scrips on Steel Sky Pirate Spoils to exchange for lightning shards at a 40 scrip to 80 shard ratio.
