Hmm, so as a low level SAM, the decision to use AOE vs single target seems to be if there are 3 or more targets the AOE does more dmg. My question is, I noticed as you level up you start doing a ton more single target damage, but I don't really see any ramp up in AOE skills. At a certain point does taht number of targets become like 5 or even higher to justify using AOE skills? Or do you basically just never use AOE at a certain point...

You'll see that as well with skills you get later. Either you'll have an AoE skill with deceptively low potency but which progressively adds up to really big numbers as you add more targets hit—such as Shoha 2—or you'll have something that does a high potency attack to "the first enemy hit and XX% less to all remaining enemies"—such as Hissatsu: Guren or Ogi Namikiri.
Monk tends to operate at a very fast GCD tier.

So, I have a question about leveling.
I'm not a big story fan and am enjoying the game whilst skipping cutscenes. I enjoy duties and battling.
I see everywhere that the MSQ is the best way to level, I finished ARR and am halfway through 7th Astral era to HW. Level 55, got those 5 levels from other things though since the 7th Astral quests give almost no xp (and yes, I understand why)
I'm wondering how the MSQ can be the best way to level when I have to do 100 story quests that give no xp in between each expansion which is like a whole day of grinding with cutscene skips. Is it really the fastest way despite the patch quests? Would love to know. Thank you!

Leveling via MSQ implies it's your first character. If it's your first character, everything you will need or want to do is locked behind the MSQ. The MSQ also gives The Largest XP gain—inside each campaign—compared to anything else.
In the patch quests between the campaigns, it gives fuck all because it isn't needed.

Additionally, a large majority of your kit is locked behind job quests, which are in turn locked behind their respective expansion. So if your goal is simply to get to max level as fast as possible, the alt level guide will still help out ... but you will be missing intrinsic parts of your class and it won't matter.

Manafont is usually used at the end of Fire phase once you have Fire 4 so you can fit an extra Fire 4 (and eventually a second Despair) into the sequence. Flare is part of your AoE rotation; you can use it in place of Despair to cap off Fire phases before getting Despair because it'll use up the rest of your mana as well, but once you get Despair, that's the better option.

There are definitely gears that are job exclusive to a single class, but there are also 'catch all' gears that are like "for all healers" that you'll be using more than anything

There are a few gear sets that are great to keep for alts while you're leveling <50, such as Foestrikers for melee DPS classes (maybe its for ranged phys DPS too?), Acolyte, Battle Mage, Infantry, etc. So keep those until you've leveled all the relevant classes past them. Then at 50, 60, 70, and 80, there are 'poetics sets' you can buy that will comfortably keep you good until 7 levels after wearing them (57, 67, 77, 87) that you'll want to keep for your other classes as well.

Also for under 50, you can usually buy the non-HQ (high quality) gears from the vendors in the town respective to where you unlocked the class (such as Lancers in Gridania)
You can replace them at 5 levels if you have the stuff for it though, but you'll still be fine at 7 levels too.

...anyways, poetics stuff is worth keeping, and as I mentioned for the <50 stuff, keep them as well until you've leveled all the alt classes that use that gear as well. AND THEN STILL keep at least the one set that you'll likely use on your retainer as they need gear too.

@toxic coral ALSO! Make sure to do at least one set of the 'role quests' at the inn in Gridania/Limsa/Uldah at the NPC called 'The Smith'. It will reward you with a 'Brand New Ring' which will increase the EXP gain for all combat classes that wear it by 30% until level 31.
PotD is great for leveling every class under lvl 58.
though tanks/healers tend to prefer leveling at 'highest capable dungeon' spam because they have short queue times.

Depends on what you are looking for. You can get marketable items, achievements and other stuff. Some people enjoy the content. Its also a good way of leveling dps alts under certain circumstances

More stuff:
Friendship Circlet (headgear) gives +20% EXP until you hit 26, and you get this from recruiting another player to the game
EXP Earring (expansion dependent) which you may have gotten from pre-order, increases EXP by 30% until you hit 81 (for the EW pre-order earring)
Eat food, gives +3% EXP while you have the food buff
Join an FC, they usually have +10% EXP buff active
All of these things stack.
