like basically if some melds can get you one less synth, that's a huge save so sometimes you meld craft for that, sometimes you can get the full progress with a careful instead of something else and that saves CP, so it depends

cooldown only starts when you gather one, just keep opening nodes to find the map you want(you don't have to gather anything either, just open, no map, close and go next, faster that way unless you need the mats)

I use them for leveling up alt DPS jobs between queues, it's not the best way but when you find one of the chains they normally tell a very good story. Outside of that they typically won't worth doing unless you just like removing the markers from the world.
