I just started Elemental set grinding myself, and honestly it hasn't been that bad of a time
It will take some investment for sure, but once you get the ball rolling it isn't too bad. Hop on trains doing NM killing and turn your crystals in Protean Crystals and things will fly by. I recommend looking up a YT guide or smt though, as it can be overwhelming in the beginning

There's some stuff from very early dungeons with the same model. Would I still get a "half-point" (black stamp), or is that only when you have the right item/wrong color (or vice-versa)?

they don't list all options as sometimes there's just too many
note that to get full marks the gear usually has to be dyable
