Now if you waited until it maxed out, sure it seems like a lot, but thats only if you don't ever use them much at all. It just seems way too low. 5 seems far more reasonable.

for inventory space increases, its not as simple as just throwing better equipment at the problem, you need to budget across your entire infrastructure to be able to handle it
because of scaling, if each server can for example, hold 5000 players logged in at a time, if you want to say, add 50 more inventory slots, that increases memory footprint by 50x5000 items at the max, so 250000 items
the character inventory also needs to be loaded after login, so that adds load to each individual server on char login, as well as the central login server for each location which manages this
also since you can move between servers its not stored per server its stored on a central database in each datacenter, so that also needs to budget space for 50 extra items per char multiplied by however many active players there may be
there are various other considerations as well which I can't even guess at, this is just based on what I know about FF14 server infrastructure and data management in general

zadnor is the best place to level an alt 70-80 but it usually takes a few hours

connection to ANY service online hops through potentially a dozen other routers before getting to the destination, so if any one of those has some kind of issue, that could be the cause
think of it like city streets, you have to drive through various intersections to get to your destination, and you could come across a traffic jam at one
could just be that it was beyond your router, and wherever the issue was has been fixed now
this is also why, testing with a browser to a random website, doesn't mean much except saying, yeah, my internet connection works
