You can still find currents by just looking for them in the world, but the compass will give you a direction and distance in yalms.
So if you're missing just one or two for a whole zone, you can find them more easily.
Also, the aether current system literally doesn't exist until you obtain the aether compass for the first time, so you may have been thinking of something else?

Yes, servers do tend to have login queues, although at the moment they're typically in the low double digits (I think the highest I see on Cactuar when I log there is in the 50s or 60s). When Endwalker releases, all servers are guaranteed to have queues in the 100+ range.
