A lot of the "ongoing game" between patches tends to be repetitive content - farming cosmetic items, leveling alt jobs, etc. It relies on the players coming up with things to entertain themselves.
On the other hand, XIV is a unique MMO in that you can easily unsub between content patches and catch up when the next story patch comes out.
