crafted gear is basically your starting gear going into a raid tier

for example, the current endgame tomestones are:
• Allegory (uncapped) - traded for i490 gear thats augmentable to i500. This was last raid tier's capped tomestone
• Revelation (capped at 900 per week) - i520 gear, augmentable to i530

• Savage gear - i530
• Crafted gear - i510, augmentable with Allegory tomes to i520

i would say as long as you have enough ilvl to enter content to continue MSQ, then you are fine. if you find yourself capping on poetics, then spend some, but dont horde them if you are maxed out since poetics are fairly easy to come by. just upgrade things as you find fit, as the MSQ should keep you adequately geared aside from some pieces

when it comes to how side content affects the story, it only changes some certain lines here or there to make things line up. for example a character you meet in the heavensward MSQ also shows up in a side raid story, so if you do the raid story the character will acknowledge that they know you, if you didnt do it, they will not say that line.

but again the impact is only like a few lines of dialogue at most

How do I unlock melding?

How can I get my gear melded?

To meld visible Materia slots a NPC melder in any major city will do (marked with a Blue Materia icon on the map). To overmeld gear you'll need to request another player to meld your gear or to do it yourself.

Why can't I meld this Materia to my stuff?

Every Tier of Materia has a minimum item level requirement that gear must meet to allow melding of that Tier. Tier 6 Materia requires an item level of 290 while Tiers 7 and 8 require an item level of 420.

Why is my meld giving +0 stats?

Every item has a maximum amount of stats that can be given through melding and the natural stats found on the gear. This can be seen at the bottom of the Materia Melding menu, as seen in the picture below.

The secondary stat with a higher number is already at the cap and cannot be further melded.
