'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts. The first rank comes from completing specific quests in the main scenario quests, with the second rank coming from Riding Maps which are bought with either Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, or Bicolor Gemstones. Mount Speed Boosts do not increase the flying speed of mounts.

Expansion Jobs and How to Unlock Them

Heavensward Expansion Jobs: Dark Knight (Tank), Astrologian (Healer), and Machinist (Ranged DPS). These jobs start at level 30 and require completion of the level 50 main scenario quest 'Before the Dawn'.
Quest Unlock Locations:
Dark Knight - Pillars(13,8).
Astrologian - Pillars(15,10).
Machinist - Foundation(8,10).

Stormblood Expansion Jobs: Red Mage (Caster DPS) and Samurai (Melee DPS). These jobs start at level 50 and require ownership of the Stormblood Expansion and a disciple of war or magic job at level 50.

How should I be building my adventurer squadrons if I'm intending to go for Captain? I'm scared of painting myself into a corner statwise, why wouldn't I just want to do nothing but XP training over and over and then just worry about stat distribution when my squad is high level?

so its not like you can realistically back yourself into a corner with squadrons

MSQ roulette can take you 40 minutes or an hour or something - the cutscenes are unskippable. They are quite easy to cruise through, just a bit mind numbing.
Its a LOT of exp it gives you but its the time taken that turns people off.

There's a setting that says "Include pet hotbar when cycling", if that it checked you should be able to cycle to the hotbar that has the dismount

or even without that, you can click off the "Mounted" buff to dismount

Why can't I enter this server?

Standard, Preferred, and New Servers will dynamically open and close themselves from newly created characters depending on how many players are online. To ensure you're able to make a new character on your server try waiting or doing so at a less active time of day.

Which world should I pick?

You can play on any world on any datacenter within FFXIV. Aside from the languages spoken, the physical location of the servers, and the status of each world, there are no major differences. This also means population on a given server is quite meaningless.

The majority of content is cross-world, with the exception of Free Companies, Linkshells, and restrictions when visiting other worlds.

If you don't mind where you play, choose a world that is Preferred or New for character creation bonuses. Check world status by using !status <world name> or via the Lodestone. For information about the status types, use !faq worldtype.

main thing to note is that retainers cannot level up past your level for that job, so if your miner is only level 5 then they can't level up past 5 as a miner.
