You have to do a level 19 quest called Waking the Spirit at The Bonfire in Central Thanalan. Once you do that, any level 19 Disciple of the Hand profession you have can meld materia into that type of armor (cloth for weavers, armor for armourers, ect.)

it's basically reach 80 > do the lvl 80 content you can with your crappy ilvl to get tomes > replace weapon then other lowest ilvl with tome gear
repeat until you can do eden's promise, run that a few times for free 510 gear
if you want to get on the gear treadmill after that then yeah it's more "grindy" like cap your weekly tomes, buy 520 pieces, run nier raids for coins, buy upgrades to upgrade to 530
but 510 is enough for all casual content
