I just learned about https://en.ff14angler.com/ which helps a lot with fishing, shows which baits to use etc.
Turns out it wasn't so much RNG that screwed me over but my choice of bait as well.
If I'm interpreting the numbers correctly, with my versatile lure I have a 0.6% chance of catching a warmwater trout - and with crow flies I have a considerably higher catch rate at 33.3%.
Now that I've attempted crow fly bait, I also found out that - similar to lures - it does not seem to get used up either.
So yeah I could've saved A LOT of time here 😂
